SPRING-MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed December 13, 1913. Serial No. 806,407.
To all whom it maygoncem Be it known that I, ERNEST L. Fnnnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in theconnty of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Springdtiattrcsses, of which the following is a specific: tion.
This invention relates to improvements in spring mattresses, and the improvement comprises adjustable side extensions vfor the mattress constructed and arranged substarn tially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a spring mattress embodying' my improvement, and Fig. 52' is a cross section of the mattress showing it mounted. upon the side rails of a .bed. Fig. -3 is a perspective view of one corner of the mat tress, and Fig. 4 is' a similar view showing a connecting bar for both the outer and inner and 6 are perspective views of modifications of the invention.
The mattress comprises a rectangular frame A of fixed dimensions surmounted by coiled springs B and a woven Wire top 0 having a heavy Wire border D of still larger dimensions than frame A. The border pieces 2 and the cross-piece 3 of frame A are of angle-iron, and corner braces 4 and a central connecting strip 5 make the structure rigid, all the pieces being riveted or otherwise united when overlapped or intersected. The border pieces 2 at the sides of the frame have slots 5 at intervals in their vcrtical flanges, and the crosspieces 3 and the end border pieces 2 have slots 6 in. their vertical flanges at points relatively near the juncture of said cross pieces with the side border pieces. A flat bar 7 extends through slots 6 at each side of the frame and each bar 7 is free to slide transversely of the frame, said slots being suiiicicntly elongated for this purpose. The ends 8 01" bars 7 are bent downiardly to prevent end movement and to secure the bars in place, see Fig. 3.
The stirrups or hangers which provide adjustable side cidcusions to support the mattress frame on ihc sidc. rails F. of a bod, comprise llat strips oi metal secured at their inner ends to the bar 7 and :l'ashioncd into hooks 10 at their outer ends, and the horizontally-extended inner end of such hangerpasses through a slot i) in Lhc bordcr piece and rests slidably therein as shown. All the stirrups 9 at each side of the frame are mounted in the same manner and connected to a single bar 7 and it is a very simple operation to adjust and hook all the stirrups at one side of the frame to the bed rail as all are jointly movable. The support afforded by the hooks is also uniformly distributor. the full length of the frame at each side thereof.
in Fig. l I show a connecting bar 1]. unit ing all the hook ends 10 of the stirrups at the same side of the frame, and this connecting bar may be a flat strip as shown in lf g. 3 or an anglebar as shown in Fig. 6, and is supplemental to the connecting bar 7 at the inner ends of the stirrups. In Fig. I I show a stirrup 12 having a twisted and slotted inner end 13 slidably sleeved over a round bar lei lixcd in the cross pieces 3, and a con- IlQttiilg bar if is riveted to the upright bent portion 16 or each stirrup to obtain the desired joint movability of all the stirrups alined at the side of the frame and to brace and fix them in alincment with each other and the frame.
In Fig. 6 I show a still further modification of the invention, the stirrups 17 being); slotted at their ends and slidably connected by bolts 01 rivets 18 with a bar 19 fixed in the cross pieces 3 of the frame, and the outer ends 2t 01" the siirrups being connected and Formed into hooks by an'angle bar 21.
What T claim is:
l. bed mattress comprising a rigid 'l'ramc, hook members slidably engaged at intervals with said irmno at opposite sides thereof. and a connecting bar united with all the hook members at each side.
2. bod mattress comprising a rigid frame, a set oi stirrups having slotted ends slidably engaged with the frame, and a rigid connecting bar for all said s't-irrups.
25. bod unit-tress comprising a rigid frame having bars lengthwise thereof at.
each side, stirrups slidably engaged at in icrvuls with the said frame and connected with said bars, and connecting bars united with said stirrups.
l'n toetimony whereof I alii); my signature in presence of two witnesses.
