HANG-ER FOR CLOTHES AND THE IlIKEi Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914:.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Clothes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and convenient device for suspending clothes or other articles at a convenient height from the ground. It is especially useful for hanging clothes to dry, or for displaying garments, fabrics orv other merchandise in stores.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, illustrating one manner in which it is applied; Fig. 2 is a broken plan View on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of its parts; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of another part; Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
As an illustration of my invention I shall show the same secured around the pipe of a common kitchen stove for the purpose of drying clothes by the heat of the stove, or even when there is no fire therein; but it is to be well understood that this is only one mode of use of the invention, and it may equally well be applied, for instance, around columns in stores for displaying goods thereon.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates an ordinary cook stove and 2 its stove pipe. Around the stove pipe, at any suitable height above the stove, is secured, by a bolt 3 and nut 4 passed through its outwardly bent ends, a band 6 of sheet iron. In said band are a circumferential series of pairs of parallel slits, and the metal between each pair of slits extends outward from the band, as shown at 7. Each bent portion thus forms a socket 8 with the main portion of the band.
The hangers 9 each consists of a rod 10 and a foot 11. The rod is of any suitable material and cross-sectional form. For ordinary household use round wooden rods will generally be preferred. Each foot consists of a cylindrical ferrule tightly surrounding an end of the rod. The outer end of the ferrule is provided with a finger extending, first, outwardly from said ferrule at an angle slightly less than a right angle, as shown at 12, and then at a more acute angle, as shown at 13. Opposite said finger, said ferrule is formed with a shoulder 14. W hen the rod is inclined to the stove pipe at a slightly, moreacute angle than that shown in Fig. 1, first the outer portion 13 of the finger, and then, when the angle of inclination is sligthly increased, the inner portion 12, of the finger, is passed upwardly through said socket. The shoulder 14 abuts against the band below the socket, the rod then securely resting extending in a position in which it extends outwardly from the stove pipe, and sloping slightly upward, as shown in Fig. 1.
The following are the advantages of my invention. First, it is cheap, requiring only a single piece of sheet metal for the band, and a single piece of sheet metal and a rod for the hanger, both of said pieces being easily out and pressed into the desired form. Secondly, it is easily and rapidly set up or put away. A single motion is suflicient either to place one of the fingers in its socket or to remove it therefrom, the hanger automatically taking a position in which it is supported by the shoulder. Third, it is neat and compact, as the band itself is scarcely noticeable when the hangers are not in use, and the hangers can be collected in a small and compact form. Fourth, it is strong and durable, as the parts are well adapted to withstand strain due to overweight, the greater part of the weight being sustained by the abutment of the shoulder l l against the stove pipe for a support, and the socket engaging the finger close to the surface of the ferrule.
I claim In combination with a circular band provided with means for fastening it around a columnar support, and having a circular series of horizontal extending portions each separated from the main portion of the band to form a socket, and hangers each comprising a Wooden rod and a metal fer- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set rule thereon havlng a finger 1n one of sald my hand in the presence of tWo subserlbing sockets, said finger having an outwardly eX- \vltnesses.
