SOCK.

To all whom it mayconcem Be it known that I, CHARLES TIGHE, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Socks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to socks or half hose and the like. v

In order that socks or half hose shall retain their correct position when in use, they are usually made with a ribbed elastic top, that is to say, the upper part of the leg portion of the sock is knitted with vertical ribs and in such a manner that this portion of the sock is much more elastic than the remaining portion, in order that it may grip tightly upon the calf of the wearer and thereby prevent the sock slipping down. In practice, suflicient and recourse has been had to many forms of suspenders which however are object'ionable and inconvenient in use.

The object of the present invention is to avoid the use of suspenders and yet to provide a sock of such a form as to grip the leg sufficiently to prevent it slipping down when in use. To this end the sock comprises in the leg portion, a front part of relatively inelastic knitted material and a back part of elastic knitted material.

The invention consists in the provision of the ribbed material not only at the top of the sock but down the leg portion at the back to the neighborhood of the heel.

I shallnow refer to the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention in one convenient form and is an elevation of the sock.

In carrying out the invention according to the mode illustrated, a sock is knitted with the usual ribbed elastic top a, but the ribbed elastic material or knitting b, is extended down the leg as far as theheel to the point Specification of Letters Patent.

0, and at the back portion only, so that the part with the ribbed knitting not only grips the leg of the wearer at the calf, but also around the back of the leg down as far as the heel. The front portion (Z, of the sock down the leg and over the instep at 6, may be knitted in any usual manner of any usual fabric, plain, figured or"embroidered. The footof the sock f, the toe g, and under portion of the heel it, may also be of any desired fabric or material.

As the ribbed knitting does not extend down the front and over the instep, it does not render the sock uncomforatble to wear as might be the case if the sock were made of ribbed material throughout.

In practice, a sock made acording to the invention will be retained in position on the leg of the wearer without necessitating suspenders or the like auxiliary devices now commonly in use, the back of the sock fits neatly any size ankle, and the ribbed back facilitates the drawing on of the sock and renders it stronger at the heel.

It will be understood that the expression ribbed knitting means the ordinary knitting adopted for the upper parts of socks, which is rendered elastic by the nature in which it is knitted and does not necessitate the inclusion of india rubber or the like.

I claim:

A sock having a ribbed portion extending entirely around the upper end and extending down the rear only from the upper portion.
