JOHN J. FER-BALL AND EDMUND MACKAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO NATIONAL BISCUIT COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STORAGE- AND DISPLAY RECEPTACLE.
ean ra.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ."Mar. 10, 191-1.
Application filed April 11, 1911. Serial No. 620,404.
To all coho/1L it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN J. FERRALL and EDMUND Mammy, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lm pirovements in Storage and Display Receptacles, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates to imprm'emcnts in storage and display receptacles, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, ellicient and reliable receptacle, by means of which the contents of the receptacle may be exhibited without unnecessarily exposing said contents to the atmosphere.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a receptacle for the storage and display of crackers, biscuits and other articles liable to be affected by exposure to the atmosphere.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device which may be readily applied to an ordinary receptacle without interfering with the general uses and operation of said receptacle, and which device will serve to protect the contents thereof while allowing of the exhibition of the said contents.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a detachable hinged cover which may be readily removed in connection with receptacles, whether or not said receptacles are provided with hinged or separate covers, or with covers at all.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, our invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numorals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a top view partly broken away showing one form of receptacle, constructed according to, and embodying our said invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top or face view; of the detachable hinged protecting cover, removed from its receptacle; Fig. 1 is an edge view thereof, as it appears when viewed from the right hand end, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In said drawings 10 designates a receptacle or box, which, in the present; instance, is shown as made of sheet metal, and provided with a cover or lid 11 made of the same material and permanently hinged thereto in the usual manner. The receptacle 10 is provided along the upper edge of its front portion with an in\\'ardlv projccting flange 12, and at its opposite end portions with similar flanges 12. 12 forming guides. I
123 denotes the transparent detachable hinged protecting section or cover, compris ing a hingitudinal attaching section 1 1 having its rear edge folded imvardly to form a reinforcing rib 15, and its opposite transverse ends 16, 1G slightly raised above the horizontal plane of said longitudinal section 14-, and thence folded inwardly upon said section 14-, and the extremities 17, 17 of said ends thence bent downwardly and outwardly again and parallel with the horizontal plane of said first fold 16, 16 but separated therefrom suflicicntly to form grooves 18, 18 adapted to receive the inwardly projecting flange 12, 12 at the opposite ends of the receptacle 10. The rear edges of the extremities 17, 17 are cut away diagonally at 18, 18 to facilitate the engagement of the ends of the longitudinal sec tion 14: with the flanges 12, 12 of the receptacle or box 10. Along the forward edges of the longitudinal section 14 are provided a series of separated hinge members 19, 19.
20 denotes a channeled frame also made of sheet metal and inclosing :1 transparent portion 21 made of glass, celluloid or other suitable material. Said frame 20 is provided upon its underside adjacent to its corners with reinforcing sections 22. 22 and along its rear edge said frame is provided with a series of separated hinge members 23, 23 which inter-mesh with the hinge members 19, 19 on the longitlnlinal section 14', and are secured thereto by a hinge pin 2 1.
The hinge members 19. 19 on the longitudinal se tion 1 1:, and the hinge members 23, 23 along the rear edge of the frame 20 are so arranged relatively to ca ch other that when the longitlulimil section 1 1 is forced back fully against the back of the rcceptacle 10, the frame 20 will rest evenly upon the inwardly projecting flanges 12, 12 of the receptacle, and lie wholly within the horizontal outline of said receptacle, and permit of the cover 11 being closed in the ordinary manner.
To apply the transparent protecting cover it merely becomes necessary to place the longitudinal section 14 diagonally across the open receptacle 10 about midway between its longitudinal ends, and cause the grooves 18, 18, in the opposite ends of the longitudinal section 14 to engage the flanges 12 12 properly. Hereupon the frame 20, and sec tion 14- are turned sufliciently to bring the transverse edges of the frame 20 and sec tion 14 into position and parallel with the transverse flanges 12 12, and. the longitudinal section 1% thence forced rearwardly until its rear edge contacts with the rear side of the receptacle 10.
It will be noted that our invention is not necessarily limited for use in connection with a receptacle having a hinged cover, but that the same may be used in connection with receptacles having separate covers, as well as receptacles having no covers at all.
t is only necessary that the receptacle be provided with suitable means to receive the ends of the longitudinal section to which the transparent protecting cover is hinged. Further, it will be noted that as each protecting cover, comprising the transparent section and the attaching section, is complete in, itself, the same may be readily removed from one receptacle when the latter is empty and applied to another without change or alteration.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle, guides extending from the opposite upper ends thereof, a cover for said receptacle comprising a relatively narrow attaching member, integrally formed securing members arranged transversely of said attaching member, at the opposite ends thereof, and adapted to slide upon said guides and fictionally engage the same to hold said cover secured to said receptacle, and a leaf hinged to one of the longitudinal edges of said attaching member, substantially as specified.
2. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle, guides extending inwardly from the opposite ends of said receptacle a detachable cover for said receptacle composed of an attaching member longitudinal provided with grooves at its opposite ends adapted to receive the inwardly extending guides on said receptacle, and a leaf hinged to said attaching member, substantially as specified.
3. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle, guides extending inwardly from the opposite ends of said receptacle, a detachable cover composed of a attaching member having transverse grooves in the opposite ends thereof adapted for sliding engagement with the inwardly extending guides on said receptacle, and a leaf hinged to said attach ing member along one of its longitudinal edges, substantially as specified.
1. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a hinged cover thereon, guides extending inwardly from the opposite ends of said receptacle, a detachable cover adapted to lie intermediate the upper edge of said receptacle and said cover, said detachable cover being composed of a longitudinal attaching member provided at its opposite ends with means adapted to engage the inwardly extending guides of said receptacle, and a leaf hinged to said attaching member along one of its longitudinal edges, substantially as specified.
5. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a hinged cover thereon, guides extending inwardly from the opposite ends of said receptacle, a detachable co-ver adapted to lie intermediate the upper edge of said receptacle and said hinged cover, and be inclosed thereby, said detachable cover being composed of a longitudinal attaching member provided at its opposite ends with means adapted to engage the inwardly extending guides on said receptacle and be supported thereby adjacent to the hinged edge of said first-named cover, and a leaf hinged to said attaching member along one of its longitudinal edges and adapted to swing in the same direction as the hinged cover first-named, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 28th day of March, one thousand nine hundred and eleven.
JOHN J. rnaaarn EDMUND MACKAY.
