Be it known that 1, PETER R. WARREN, citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Covers for Candy-Boxes and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object a temporary cover which can be placed over an open box or tray to protect the contents thereof and whichmay be lifted up to give access to the contents of the box.

The temporary cover embodying my invention is adapted for use with any open box or tray but is particularly useful in connection with so-called tubular boxes which consist of an open or coverlcss tray and a tubular member or shell intowhich the open box or tray slides through open ends. These tubular boxes have not been convenient for uses to contain candies and the like for display in shops and stores because, if kept closed, so that the goods are protected from exposure to dust as is required by law in many States, the goods are not visible to the prospective purchaser; also, it is difficult to get at the goods in the box or tray since to do so it is necessary to take up the box and slide it out of the tubular shell.

In the'use of my invention with theordinary tubular box, the goods are packed in the tray as usual, the temporary cover be ing in place under the tubular shell or cover. On their arrival, the shop keeper removes the tubular shell or cover and the goods are protected by the temporary cover, the temporary cover being hinged to an edge member inserted between the edge of the box and the goods or between the thickness of card board from which the tray is formed. The temporary cover being provided with a sight opening closed by a piece of transparent material suchas gelatin, displays the goods attractively while at the same time protecting them from dust. When it is desired to make a sale, the cover can be lifted up without disturbing the goods and the goods removed as required after which the cover drops into its original position by its own weight. In the form shown in the drawings, 1 make this temporary cover from a single piece of suitable material out to the required shape and printed on one side of the sheet only.

The cover is, therefore inexpensive to manufacture, and when folded into final form is printed on both sides.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.

In the drawings,Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the temporary cover embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the blank of material of which the cover shown in vFig. l is composed. Fig. 3 shows the cover in place on a box and lifted a little to permit access to the contents of the box. Fig. 4: is a section on line ll of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a modification of the cover shown in Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 2 there is shown a blank having a top panel 11 and an under panel 12 oined along the weakened or scored line 13. Said two panels are provided with registering sight openings 14. and 15 respectively. The sight opening 14 is slightly smaller than the sight opening 15 so that in the completed article the edges of the sight opening 15 will not be visible. At 16, 16 are shown a series of semi-circular slots forming tucks or tabs under which the cor ners of the sheet 17 of transparent material are inserted to hold the same in place. It will be seen that this arrangement positions the sheet of transparent material accurately but at the same time permits it to expand and contract relatively to the remainder of the cover without warping or crinkling as is the case if the transparent material is glued to the cover. This obviates the use of moisture in securing a sheet of gelatin in place. This is very important because gelatin warps, twists, and cracks if moisture contacts with it.

At 18, 18 are shown two cutaway corner portions forthe purpose which will be explained later. At 19, 19are shown overlapping edge portions which are glued to the corresponding edges of the under panel 12 when this panel is folded over onto the top panel 11 as shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the left hand ends of the side strips 19, 19 rest on the top panel 11 at the points exposed by the cut away corners 18, 18 and are secured thereto by glue. This construction not only holds the two panels I folding box having more than one thickness of material or into a slit in the side of the box. The end edges of the side member 20 are inclined as shown at 21, 21 and are reinforced by flaps 22 glued to the approximate portion of the side member 20. At 23, is shown a tab formed by a semi-circular slit in the panel 12 and having its diameter coincident with the folding line 13. hen the panel 12 is superposed upon the panel 11, the tab 23 projects and forms a convenient handle by means of which the cover may be lifted up when it is desired to ob tain access to the contents of the box.

In Fig. 5 is shown a slightly modified form of the temporary cover embodying my invention. In the cover shown in this figure there are two sight openings 31, 32 separated by a strip 38 ornamented by two projections 34 and 35. Furthermore instead of having the side edges 36 and 37 glued down as previously described tabs 38 are formed on the side edges 36 and 37 and these are inserted in slots 39 in the back panel thus holding the parts securely in place.

,lVhat I claim is:

1. The improved temporary cover for boxes formed of a single sheet of box board and comprising a panel having a sight opening therein, a second panel secured to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for first panel and having a sight opening which registers with the sight opening of the first panel, a transparent member interposed between said panels which closes said si ht openings, and an edge member which is secured to one of said panels and is capable of insertion in the box with which the said cover is used.

2. The temporary cover for candy boxes and the like, made from a single sheet of box board and comprising two superposed panels having sight openings therein, there being a sheet of transparent material interposed between said panels to close the sight openings, one of said panels having cut away corners and the other of said panels being provided with side flaps which are secured by adhesive to the edges of the other panel and to the first panel at the points exposed by the cut away corners. 3. The temporary cover for candy boxes and the like, made from a single sheet of box board and comprising two panels with mg 7 istering sight openings, a sheet of transparent materlal interposed between said two panels to close the said sight openings, one

of said panels having flaps which are secured to the other of said panels, and the other of said panels having tucks formed by slots into which the adjacent portions of the said transparent material are inserted to position the said transparent material relatively to the sight openings.
