WINDOW-PLATFORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1912.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
Serial No. 680,809.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn M. Sononnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Kenosha, county of Kenosha, and State of iVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vin- (low-Platforms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window platforms, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which shall be of a foldable portable nature, one which may be readily and quickly arranged in operative position in a window, and one which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a window frame to which is applied a window platform embodying my invention, the latter being also shown in section, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail illustrating the means employed for releasably locking the rail members of the platform in upright position, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the platform as well as the window frame being shown in section, Fig. 4 is a section taken on substantially line (a w of Fig. 8, Fig.' 5 is a sectional view showing the platform in collapsed condition, and Fig. (3 is a detail of one of the supporting rods included in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a bottom consisting of a tubular frame part 1 which is substantially U-shaped in form and a ret-iculate central portion 2 which is rigidly secured to the frame 1, the parallel sides of the frame 1 being extended and the outer ends thereof being open. Swingingly secured to the side portions of the frame 1 at the extremities of the floor member 2, are side rails 3, the lower extremities of the substantially inverted U-shaped frame portion 3 of each of the rails 3 being secured to hearing members 1 rockingly mounted upon the sides of frame member 1 between stationary collars Similarly secured to the outer portion of the frame 1 is an outer rail (3, the extremities of the frame (3 thereof being secured to bearing members 7 which are rockingly mounted upon the frame 1 between stationary collars S. The construction is such that the rails 3 and (3 will be adapted to be folded down upon each other in a position extending parallel with the lloor member 2, the rail (5 being offset outwardly, adjacent the base thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1. and 5, in order to adapt the same for folding over the rails 3. Said rails are relcasably locked in upright position preferably through the medium of arms 1') and 10, which project inwardly from the side rail members 3 and the outer rail member 6 at the adjaccntedges thereof, the arms 10 being provided with pivoted screws 11 adapted to engag: slots 12 formed in the arms 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 9., a thumb nut 13 threaded upon the upper or free end of each of the screws 11 being adapted to clamp the overlapping arms 9 and 10 together to hold the rails 23 and 6 in upright position, as will be readily understood. With this construction, when it is desired to release the rail members, in order to fold the same downwardly, the nuts 13 need only be retracted, whereupon the screws 11 may be swung outnuirdly to disengage the arms 9. In locking the rails in operative position, this operation is reversed.
Secured upon the side bars of the frame 1 substantially medially of the extremities thereof, are depending posts 1 1 and 15, the upper ends of said posts being provided with hearing portions which slidably engage the side bars of said frame 1, said posts being secured in positions of adjustment by set screws 16. Provided at the lower extremities of the posts 1-.1: and 15 are buffers 17 adapted, when the device is in operation, to engage against the window sill in order to support the floor portion of the platform in horizontal position, the posts 1:1 and 15 being of different lengths, as shown, in order to adapt the same to cooperate with the peculiar construction of a window sill, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Slidably mounted in the parallelly extending ends of the frame 1 are rods 18, the
same being secured in positions of adjustment by means of transversely extending screw plns 19 arranged 1n the ends of frame 1, sald pins removably engaging perforations 20 provided for the reception thereofin said rods 18, there being a plurality of perforations. 20 provided in each rod in order to permit of the desired adjustment thereof. Provided at the rearward ends of the rods 18 are bearing members or fittings 21 in which is slidably mounted a transversely extending bar consisting of telescoping sections 22 and 23. The construction is such, as will be observed, that said bar may be longitudinally adjusted by sliding the sections 22 and 23 in the fittings 21, the same being locked in positions of adjustment by means of set screws 24. In use, said bar serves as a means of holding the platform in operative position or more precisely as a means of limiting the outward movement thereof through the window, the outer ex tremities of the sections and 2 3 being adapted to engage against the inner sides of the vertical bars of the window frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said ends of said sections being provided with upholstering 25 or other covering in order to prevent marring the surfaces with which the same are brought into contact. By reason of the adjustments afforded said sections, it will be seen that the device is rendered applicable to windows of various widths, said sections being adapted to be adjusted accordingto the width of the window frame in which the platform is arranged.
A window platform of the construction set forth is durable and economical in con struction. The same may be readily and quickly arranged in position in a window and as quickly and expeditiously removed when desired. lVhen in operative position,
the rails 3 and 6 will serve as a guard to prevent the user of the platform from falling. The device may be collapsed into small com pass for ready transportation or shipment, and may be readilv and quickly unfolded for use.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come withln the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byv Letters Patent, is:
In a window scaffold, a U-shaped frame comprising a transverse end portion and parallel side portions, a pair of side frames and an end frame each formed of a U- shaped member and a panel, bearings fixed to the free ends of each of said. Ushaped members and rotatably mounted on the respective portions of said U-shaped frame, collars fixed to said frame portions upon each side of said bearings, and co-acting means on said U-shaped members for holding the side and end frames in extended position, said end frame being outwardly bowed adjacent the lower end to facilitate folding fiat over the side frames, substantially as described. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH M. SCHOLEY. [n s] Witnesses CHARLES A. TARBELL, MARGARET Scnotny.
