MORRIS SCHWERIN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 108,193, dated October 11, `1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTERS FOR TRUNKS..
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o f the sama 4To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Monats SCHWERIN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Corner Friction-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in applying friction-rollers to the bottoms of trunks, boxes, chests, and other articles, and consists in the mode of applying and protecting the roll, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l represents a sectional top view of a bot tom cleat, with the roller attached according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of fig. l on the line a: x. y
Stimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding par s.
A is thc cleat, one or more of which is fastened to the bottom of the. trunk, chest, box, &c., in the usual manner.
B is the friction-roller, which revolves on a pin in ears attached to a fastening-plate, C, which plate is screwed to the upper side of the cleat, as seen in fig. 1, so that the roller will project through the cleat, as seen in lig. 2.
A`n oriiice, of suitable size to admit the roll and the ears on the plate, is made through the cleat, thus re-l reversing the usual imode of attaching these rolls. The plate G may be made with ends turned at right angles, so as to receive the cleat and strengthen the connection, as seen-in g. l.
D is a metallic strap, which is attached to the under side of the cleat, and turned up onto the side of' the trunk or other article toV which it is fastened.
There is an orifice made through this strap'ivhich receives the roll, as 'seen in fig. 2, but sucient rooin is given for the roll to play freely. -Thisstrap is in contact with lthe pivot ears, and preventsthe pivot pin from moving outward in either direction, andserves to strengthen the roller as well as the corner of' the trunk, box, or chest. y
By putting the roll through the cleat and strap-as represented, it is entirely protectedfrom danger of being broken or displaced.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cleat A, roller B, the plate and ears C, and the strap D, combined, arranged, and operating substantiall)r as and for the purposes described.
MORRIS SCHWERIN.
