FENCE-POST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBEnTUs E. Hanson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason City, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in fence posts and attachments therefor and has for its primary 4 object a simple and eflicient construction of fence posts which will be durable and not liable to get out of order, and which may be firmly held in position in the ground and capable of withstanding to a marked degree the strains and lateral stresses to which devices of this character are subjected in service, and which may be cheaply and easily manufactured and readily set up.
A further object of the invention is an improved device for use in clenching, on or against the inner wall of a tubular fence post, the staples or similar fastening devices for holding the line wires.
A still further object of the invention is an attachment whereby a sign may be easily attached and be supported by one, two, or more of the posts for advertising and similar purposes, the parts of the sign holding attachment being very simple in construction and strong and not liable to become loosened or otherwise get out of order.
And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. I
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation of my improved fence post, parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a reduced scale, illustrating the clenching device in its operative position; Fig. 3 is a side view of the upper end of the post with the sign supporting attachment secured thereto; Fig. t is a sectional view of a portion of the post;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 19, 1913.
Patented Dec. 2, 1913.
Serial No. 755,450.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the post with the slgn holding bars partly in section; Fig. 6 1s a sectional side elevation of the post and the clenching device; Fig. 7 is an elevatron showing several posts supporting a s gn; and Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view through the post.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanylng drawing by like reference characters.
My improved fence post 1 is tubular as shown, being preferably formed of ordinary lIOIl P1136 such as gas-pipe or the like of the required length and it is formed with a plurallty of openings 2 extending therethrough, sa1d openings being arranged in obliquely disposed pairs, as shown and the pairs being arranged 1n a vertically or longitudinally extending series, the oblique disposition of the openings enabling the staples 3 or similar fastening devices engaged in said openmgs, to properly extend across the line wires 4.
The post 1 is preferably formed with a base 5 which consists of two correspondingly formed bars which extend around the opposite sides of the post at the lower end thereof, said base including horizontally extending wings 6 that are riveted, bolted, or otherwise secured together and which preferably are disposed in line with the fence wires. If desired, the ends of these wings 6 may rest upon earthen or concrete base plates 7 particularly in places where the ground is soft, so as to prevent the post from sinking.
To facilitate the operation of setting the post up and to assist in holding the post by means of staples 3, as above stated, and 1n order to clench the staples when driven into the openings 2, I provide a clenching device which is constructed as follows: This clenching device includes a main bar 10 which is tapered as shown, and which is provided at any desired intervals with any desired number of lateral projecting recessed extensions 11 designed to receive a tapered Wedge bar 12, said wedge bar being preferably formed with a rounded or sharp edge 13 whereby when the clenching device is in position the spurs or extremities of the staples will be properly bent back toward or against the inner wall of the post.v The wedge bar 12 is formed with any desired number of apertures 14 extending therethrough whereby, after the wedge bar has 7 Very easily removed by hand.
In order to determine the proper position of the clenching device within the post in registry with the inner ends of the openings 2, I preferably provide an indicator 15 which is in the form of a bar or strip having a lateral end 16 formed with an aperture 17 through which a fastening device may pass, and said fastening device may also pass through one of the apertures 14 of the wedge bar 12, whereby the indicator may hang down on the outer side of the post in line with the openings 2 and indicate that the clenching device on the inside of the post is in proper position.
My improved sign holding attachment includes a cap 18 which is screwed upon or otherwise secured to the upper end of the fence post, and a bar 19 which extends up along the outer side of the post and is offset to properly pass the cap, the sign 20 being connected to the upwardly projecting end of'this bar in any desired manner. The attachment also includes a brace bar 21 which is secured to the bar 19 below the sign and extends down around. the opposite side of the cap 18, the lower ends of both bars being secured to the post by a transversely extending'bolt 22. Preferably the brace bar 21 is secured to the cap 18 by a screw or bolt 23, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. It is to be understood that one, two, or more adjacent posts may be provided with these sign supporting attachments whereby a sign of considerable length may be supported by the fence, as for example along a railroad where the fence. may be used to advantage for advertising or similar purposes.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the-preferred embodiment of my invent-ion, it is to be under tubular fence posts, consisting of a main bar formed with a plurality of laterally pro jecting recessed extensions, and a wedge bar receivable 1n the recesses of sald extensions, for the purpose speclfied.
2. A device for use in clenching staples in hollow fence posts, consisting of a tapered bar provided with recessed extensions, and a wedge bar receivable in said extensions.
3. A device for use in clenching staples in hollow fence posts, consisting of a tapered bar provided with a plurality of laterally projecting recessed extensions, and a wedge bar receivable in said extensions, said wedge bar being provided with a plurality of apertures extending therethrough.
4. A device for use in clenching staples in hollow fence posts, consisting of a bar provided with a plurality of recessed extensions, a wedge bar receivable in the recesses of said extensions, and an indicator bar connected to the wedge bar.
5. A device for use in clenching staples in hollow fence posts, consisting of a bar provided with a plurality of laterally projecting recessed extensions, a wedge bar receiv-- able in said extensions and formed with a plurality of apertures extending therethrough, and an indicator bar formed with a laterally extending end having an aperture extending therethrough whereby a fastening device may be inserted through the aperture of the indicator bar and one of the apertures of the wedge bar, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERTUS E. HANSON.
