UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WV; WILLIAMS, OF UNION CITY, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 539,159, dated May 14:, 1895.
Application filed June 4, 1894. Serial No. 513,396- (No model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that-I, J OHN W. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
1 My invention relates to improvements in fence posts, and has special reference to a metal fence post adapted to support a combined wire and board or slat fence, and the object of my invention is the provision of a metal fence post which can be easily and quickly placed in position, which will withstand hard usage and support the fence firmly under all circumstances and which will be in expensive thus producing a practical fence 2 5 post.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a fence post embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 presents a perspective view of my improved fence-post, with the fence wires and boards secured thereto. Fig. 2 presents a detail view of the main post.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A des- 3 5 ignates the main or vertical post having the lower tapered or pointed end B to facilitate the driving of the post into the ground.
The post is provided with a series of inclined kerfs O, which receive the fence Wires and the wires are retained by means of the pivoted latches or looks D, which have indentations or recesses to engage and hold the fence wires,
as shown.
,braces areformed with the lugs G which are secured to the post A.
The upper ends of the braceE and the brace F are provided with vertical portions H through which pass bolts or fastenings which secure the panels between the said portions and the main post as shown.
From this construction it is evident that I provide a fence post which will support the wires and panels in a proper manner and which will produce a simple, durable and practical post.
I claim- The herein described fence post, consisting of the flat post having the entering point, and the kerfs to receive the fence wires, the latches hinged to the post adjacent to the kerfs for securing the wires, the short inclined brace having its upper end formed with a vertical portion or lip for hearing against the panel and having the lower broad base, the long inclined brace arranged on the opposite side of the post having the vertical portion or lip atthe upper end to bear upon the panel and having the broad base in line with the baseof the short brace, and fastenings for securing the ends of said braces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. WILLIAMS.
