JOHN BOOTH, or PERU, INDIANA.
FIREPROOF SAFE FOR CABINETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 16, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Boorrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fireproof Safe for Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- This invention relates to a new and useful fireproof safe adapted for use in connection with a cabinet.
The invention comprises a metal box, including a fireproof safe constructed of asbestos smaller in size than a metallic box, but conforming to the contour thereof and fitting in said metallic box, there being a sheet of asbestos arranged zig-zag between the two boxes, and including a drawer slidable in the fireproof asbestos box.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a cabinet or table showing the safe applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the falsedoor 32 closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of the slidable drawer.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a table or cabinet having the usual upper plane surface, and provided with the usual legs 2. The cabinet or table is provided with a downwardly swinging door 7, only a portion of which is shown in Fig. 1, hinged at 6. The cabinet or table is provided with guides 9, only one being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, for the reception of the usual slide 10. The rear portion of the cabinet is provided with the usual pigeon holes 11. This slide when extended constitutes a writing surface, while the pigeon holes are designed to contain the usual stationery.
In the end of the table or cabinet, between the end board 18 and a member 4, a metallic box 14 is arranged. This box is constructed of any suitable metal such as sheet metal or the like and may be secured in position by any suitable means. Upon the inner side of the metallic box and spaced apart from the inner surface thereof are Patented Nov. 11,1913. Serial No. 666,124.
upper and lower asbestos walls 15 and 16 and the asbestos side walls 17 and 18, which are so arranged as to constitute an inner asbestos box lining. Between the inner box lining and the inner surface of the metallic box a sheet of asbestos 19 is arranged in a zigzag manner, thus providing means for holding the asbestos box lining spaced apart from the metallic box. This sheet of asbestos lining 19 also provides air spaces 20. The forward and rear ends of the metallic box are constructed of much thicker metal than the upper and lower and side walls of the box; The upper and lower and side walls are secured to the forward and rear end pieces 21 and 22, by any suitable means such as nails 23. Such joints are so made, as to exclude the air from the spaces 20. The metal which forms the upper and lower portions and the side walls of the box is secured within the recesses 24 of the forward end piece 21. The forward end piece 21 is provided with an opening 25 which registers with the asbestos box lining. The joint between the box lining and the end piece 21 is such as to exclude air, as shown at 26. Received within the box lining is a drawer 27, constructed of any suitable metal, the end pieces 28 and 29 of which are thicker than the side walls and the bottom, as shown in Fig. 4. The end piece 29 of the drawer is provided with an extension flange 30, which engages the end piece 21 to limit the drawer in its movement. Hinged at 31 is a false door 32, the outerface of which appears in harmony with the balance of the cabinet, thus tending to obviate the fact that the table or cabinet contains a safe deposit box and drawer. The end piece 29 and the false door 32 are supplied with the usual form of combination locks 33 and 34, the detail structure of which may be any conventional form, therefore such structure is not disclosed. The false door 32 is provided with a depression 35, to receive the knob 36 of the drawer 27.
From the foregoing it will be observed, there has been devised a simple and efficient .fireproof safe, applicable to any article of furniture, and one which has been found desirable and practical.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In a fireproof safe, a metallic box comprisingupper, lower and side walls, and end pieces to which said walls are secured,
conforming to the contour thereof and fitting in said metallic box and spaced apart therefrom, one of the end pieces of the metallic box having an opening registering material arranged zigzag between the fireproof box and the metallic box a drawer a fireproof box constructed of asbestos in the fireproof box and provided with a 10 smaller in size than the metallic box but combination lock.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN BOOTH.
