` `Letters Patent No. 107,744, dated September 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAsTENlNes FoR rLusen-Ties.
The Schedule `referred to in these Letters` Patent and making part of the same.
I I To all whom it may concern:4 y
I Be it known that I, WIIQLIAINL (A. WIcKs, ot the l `city of Baltimore, county of'Baltimore and Stat-e oi' `Maryland, have invented an improved Shirt-studand Fasteningfor Neck-tie; `and I do hereby declare the following to he an exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing and to the `making part of this specification, in` whichl Figure 1` represents the hook, attached to a circular or Vangular plate, that is` perforatedso as to he sewed fast to an ordinary bow or loop of a neck-tie.
Fignre' represents the. spring catch, that is V- shaped, and on which shoulders are formed.` rlhis l:spring catch, is also attached to a circular or angular `plate. of metal, (or of` any other materiah) being also perforated, so as to he sewed fast to anyordinaryloop I Figure represents t-heoval-"holder, or oblong perfox-ated plate, vwit-h an `oval aperture in the cent-er, haring a bar at .the hack side, and a projecting pin in itsV center. Thisis, likewise, intended to he sewed onto the loop or how o'fan ordinary neck-tie.
I Figure 4 represents `an oblong perforated plate,`wi th This plate is also in- Figure 5 represents the shirt-stud or fastening for neck-tie. It has allait, hollow center, A, with an oval plate, B, on one end, and a circular hollow head.'0,
on the' opposite cnd,.having an aperture through the' center. y
The nature of my invention consists in the' shape and construction of the shirt-stud, iig. 5, fortlie purpose of heilig worn in the shirt-bosorc'asa button or stud, or when required to be used as a fastening fora A represeptsthe flat center piece: ofthe stud, that 'is formed of a' double plate, so as' to be hollow.
. Biisan oval 'pla te,`at the one endof 'the center piece A, that serves as a button for'a shirt-collar or bosomby being inserted through the `holes of the col-v lar-band or bosom. y
On the' opposite end of the center piece A is' a circular hollow head,'G, with a slot, D, at `the side, and` passing through it, for the purpose of receiving and holdinga neck-tie by the hook E, as shown at iig. l.
`This shirt-stud is tubular or hollow throughout its whole length, the aperture F being in the centeiof the oval plate B, center piece A, and hollow head C, and either end of the stud can be used as abutton for the collar or bosom, so that, when the shirt-collar is buttoned with the round head C, the oval plate on the outside is connected 'withthe oblong plate of iig. 3 hy being passed upon the projecting pin G, and through the oval aperture H', and the neck-tie being turned half around, it is fastened and securely heldchy the oval,
plate B; or the spring catch J, ot' iig. 2, may ce in serted into the aperture F of the stud, and the neckf tie is secured by the shoulders of the spring expanding on the inside ot' the stud. l p
If the oval plate B of the stud is inserted through the button-holes of the shirt-collar to button the shirt, and the roundhead C be on the out-side, then the hook E, of iig. l, is inserted into the slot'D of t-h'e head to secure the neck-tie; or the recess K, of the rplate L,
'of fig. 4, may be fitted upon .the round head C, and
thus the neek-tie is, likewise, secured to the stud. w
,Vl/'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p y y The tubular st'ud' or hollow shirt-button, .wit-h its center piece A, oval plate B, hollow head C, slotfl), and aperture F, for the purpose of fastening a` necktie by means of the connecting devices in igs. Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, 4as herein described and set forth.
' WM. A. WIOKS.
