provements in Open-Exhaust Silencers, of
which the following is a specification.
The resent invention relates to a device for a sllent and open exhaust of the gases of explosive engines.
The principle of the arrangement is as follows: The exhaust tube freely open at its end is provided for one part of its length with holes or narrow openings. The exhaust gases are divided into two parts, one
which follows the exhaust tube and the other which traverses the openin Consequently the pressure adually fa ls in the exhaust tube and a gee exhaust is effected with the gradual stopping of the gases. l' The eilicacy of the dev1ce is increased by arrangmg its parts in such a way -as to increase the proportion of the gases which traverse the openings.
The annexed drawing shows by way of example various methods of carrying out the object of the invention.
` Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a free silencer; Fig. 2'is a corresponding lateral elevation seen from the left; Fig. 3 is a detail; Figs. 4 and 5 are longitudmalsections of modifications of the device.
A simple exhaust tube pierced with holes or narrow openings for part of its length only gives moderate results. The proportion of gas which traverses the openings is small and in practice it is necessary to have recourse to one of the arrangements which I will now describe and whose object it is to increase this proportion.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the exhaust tube a, which is pierced with narrow openings a1 for one part of its length, is contained within a tube c which is shorter than the tube a. The tubes a, 6,'0, are held at a convenient distance from one another by the endvblocks d and also b the annular blocks e and f which act at t e same time as Stoppers., The tube b is ierced with small holes b1. in the part whic lies between the blocks d and e` openin and with relatively larger holes bz in the part which lies between the blocks e and One art of the exhaust gases has its exit direct y through the tube a, the other part traverses the openings a1, then `the holes b1 and renters the tube b through th holes b2. The gases which go out directly through the tube a produce on the gases which go out from the tube c, that is to say, from the a1, a suction effect analogous to the act1on of an ejector, and they lncrease in consequence the proportion of gases which traverse the openings al.V The eiiicacy of the arrangement is. further increased by bending back the lip a2 of the openings a1 as shown in Fig. 3. Y
' Fig. 4 shows a modification in vwhich the tube b has been replaced by two transverse Stoppers la. perforated and placed in the tube c, w ich has a coned outer end c1 over the outer end of the inner tube a, as in an ejector, so that the gases passing from the latter create a depression within the exterior tube c to draw the gasesthrough the lateral openings in the inner tube a, as indicated by the arrows.
vFi -5 illustrates another modification whic is at the Sametime of a simpler construction and permits of a better` drawing of the gases through the tube 0. f In this case, the inner tube a has an' increased number of lateral openings a1 surrounded by an 'intermediate perforated tube b. The forward end of the outer inclosing tube c i`s coned over the outer end of the inner tube, as in the construction Fig. 4.
I claim'as my invention:
1. A free and silent exhaust for explosive engines, comprising an interior unobstruct-led tube open atits outer end and having throughout a greater partof its length lat-'- eral openings, an exterior concentric tube surrounding said interior tube and means whereby the gases passing out of the end of the interior tube create a depression within the exterior tube to draw the gases through the lateral openin in said interiory tube.
2. A free and si ent exhaust for explosive engines, comprising an interior unobstructed tube open at itsl outer end, and having throughout agreater pari-.fof its length latf l eral openings, an exterior concentric tube surrounding this interior tube, and an intermediate perforated tube, the interior and exterior tubes at their outer` ends constituting an ejector to create a, depression within the exterior tube to draw the gases through the 'openings in the interior and intermediate tubes. v
In testimony whereof4 I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of 10.
