Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed February '24, 1913. Serial N o; 750,163.
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois, .l have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway Draft-Rigwhich the following is a full, clearK concise, and Aexact description, reference be` ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
y invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars. v.
The object of my invention is to provid a draft rigging of eiiicient action and durable construction.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure l is a Aside elevation partly in longitudinal section on line 1-1 of Fig. A2 of a draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 3, 3 represent draft sills or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 4 the end sill, 'the buffer block, 6 the draw-bar carry-iron, 7 the tie plate,- 8 the 'draw bar, the rear endof which is received-within the hollow head 9 of the draft yoke 10, and is slidably connected thereto by means of the transverse coupler key 11.
12 represents the front follower, 13 the rear follower, 14, 14 front stop members, 15, 15 rear stop members, the front stop members being provided with the front stop shoulders 16, 16, and the-rearstop members .being provided with the rear stop shoulders 17, 17. Secured to either draft sillis a plate 29, the said plates having at their forward ends the front limiting stop shoulders 18 and at their rear ends the rear limiting stop f shoulders 19.
All the foregoing parts are of well known construction: Within the draft ront and `yoke and between the rear followers is disposed a friction in number and in annular arrangement, the wedge or spreading memer 23 .and the antifriction rolls 24 interposed between th'e wedge and the friction Patented-sept. so, 1913.
shoes. Seated between the friction shoes at y their forward ends and the friction shell at 1ts rear end are the springs 25 and 26. An outer` spring 27 incloses the friction shell, and is seated at its rear end against the rear follower 13, and at its forward end against the front follower 12. 4
hen in normal position, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, the front follower is disengaged from the wedge, and the spring 27 presses' at both its ends' against the followers. On rearward movement of the draw bar the spring 27 is compressed-by the rearward movement of the front follower until the front follower 12 engages the `wedge 23, when the friction mechanism comes int-o action, and the rearward movement of the draw bar is resisted both bythe outer spring 27 and the mechanism within.
parts within the shell are held in assembled.
conditionvby the connecting rod 28, the function of which is well understood. The spring 27 with is received .between the followers and within the lateral opening 30of the draft yoke, being supported. thereingagainst downward displacement by thelowf iinb of said yoke,
' and maintained agaiislateral displacement the inclosed friction shell 20 by the bars or plates 29,129. 'With this device I am enabled to secure an easy initial compression resisting movement through the resisting action of the spring 27 and a high resisting capacitv through the combined resistance lof the parts within the friction shell and the spring 27 without the same.
