To CLZZ whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, Gnoaon A.. JoirNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, 'have invented a certain n ew. and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railwayars, of which the following 1 s a full, clear, concise, andexact descrlptipn, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention 1s to provide a draft rigging of relatively low capacity on forward movement of the draw bar, and
relatively high capacity in buiiing movenient of the draw bar.
It constitutes an improvement upon my invention disclosed in my copendmgapplication, SeriafNo. 725,603 filed October 14, 1912. y

Referring' to the drawings 5, 5 represent center sills or parts of the ear' frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 6 the end sill, 7 the buffer' block, 8 the draw bar carry iron-all of usual construction.-
9 represents a draw bar having the lateral slot 10, 11 a yoke member, 12, 12 forward stop members suitably secured tothe center sills, 13 the coupler key. The voke member is forwardly provided with a hollow hea-d 14 to receive the .draw bar, said head having lateral slots 15, 15 for the 'passage of the coupler key 13 therethrough. The stop members and center sills are provided with the slots 16, 16 suitably arranged to permit the passage of the coupler key therethrough, and longitudinally extended to 'permit the movement of the said key therein 1n buff and,

Mounted between the center sills is the Compression resisting member'l?. The said compression resisting member 17 comprises a shell 18, and spring elements 19, and friction elements 20 within the shell. The shell .consists o f a spring cage 21, and a friction case 22. The spring cage 21 1s preferably rectangular in shape, and having a hollow interior 23, and closed at its forward end by the preferably, integral' plate 24,. which serves as a front follower, and in normal position or forward movement of the gear` Eengages the Afront stop members 12, 12.
The friction case 22 is at the rear end of the'shell, and is preferably integral there-- with. In preferable construction it is oylindrical in shape,'having the internal friction face 25, -and is open at its rear end 26. Y
Withinv the friction caseare the friction ele7 ments 20, which consist of a wedge 27 and annularly arranged segmental friction shoes 28, vpreferably three zin'gnumber,A the said shoes each having a friction faceV 29 for en-k gagement with the internal friction face 25 of the friction shell, and each being pro- .vided on the inner surface with a wedging face 30 between which and the wedging face 3 1of the wedge is interposed the anti-friction roller 32. y The wedge 27. is provided at its rear end with a recess 33 to receive the nut 34 of the short connecting rod 35, which through said wedge'. and through the clip 36, the head of said 'rodheing disposed within the recess 37 inthe forward face ofthe clip 36. The clip 36 serves withthe connectin 4rool to hold the friction members in assembed position.
Within the spring cage and between the spring elements therein and the friction ele ments within the friction case is disposed the follower 38 comprising a transverse plate 39 and a boss @extended rearwardly therefrom. The boss 4Q is of suitable size and shape to engage the forward ends 41 of the friction shoes on buffin'g movement of the draft rigging, and in preferable construcion is of a general. cylindrical shape` It is provided with a vertical slot 42 to receive the preferably Hat vertical key 43, which passes through the slots 44, 44. providedin lthe upper and lower portions of the spring cage, and also passes through vthe slots 45, 45 lprovided 1n the upper and lower limbs 46 and 4 7 respectively of the yoke 11.
