ISIDORE GREENWALD AND JOSEPH BLAUSTEIN, OF PITTSBURGH, AND MORRIS Z. WEISS AND MAX SELKOVITS, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
Application filed April 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,526.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, l'sinonn (innerv- WALD and Joscrn Br..xusrnm, residing at Pittsburgh, and lvloiuus Z. W loss and Max S'nnnovrrs, residing at Mcl ieesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lainpdl lxtinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accoi'npanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp extinguishers, and more particularly to that type of lamp having a burner provided with a flat wick and has for its object to provide within the burner means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for snufling or extinguishing the flame of a wick when the lamp is accidentally tilted or upset thereby over coming the liability of conflagrations or explosions.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a lamp extinguishing means carried within the lamp burner and which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and quick in its action, readily positioned Within the burner and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come Within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the d'awmgs wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lamp burner showing the adaptation therewith of an extinguishing device in accordance with this invention, the device being in an inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a lamp burner tilted, showing the adaptation therewith of an extinguishing device in accordance with this invention, the extinguishing device being shifted to operative position. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of elements of the extinguishing device, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the removable perforated flanged top for the burner body.
Referring to the drawing in detail '5 denotes a burner body provided with a removable perl'orated flanged top (3 through which extends a wick tube 7, the lower portion of the latter flaring and connected to the inner portion of the burner body. The upper portion of the wick tube 7 is rectangular and extends above the perforated top 6. The wick tube 7 is disposed centrally with respect to the burner body Mounted upon the burner body 5 is a casing 8 provided at its top with a transverse slot 9 for the passage of the flame. The casing S is provided with suitable means, as at 10 for supporting a lamp chimney.
lonnccted to the perforated top (3 at each end of the wick tube 7 is a vertically disposed square plate 11 to the upper corners of which the lower ends 12 of a pair of oppositely disposed extinguishing shutters are pivoted, as at 13. One of the shutters is indicated at 1 f and the other at 15. The lower ends of the shutters 14.--15 are geared together, as at 16 so that when the shutter 15 is operated the shutter 14: will be shifted therewith, and by gearing the shutters in a manner as indicated they will be moved toward each other and over the top of the wick tube to snuff or extinguish the flame when the shutter 15 is shifted toward the wick tube. The shutter 15 centrally thereof has a depending arm 18 which terminates in a curvilinear bifurcated hooked end 19 for a function to be presently referred to.
Connected to and depending from the perforated top 6 of the burner body 5 at one side of the wick tube 7 is a hanger 20 connected to the eye 21 carried by the top of a weight 22, the latter being semi-cylindrical in eontour. Arranged below the perforated top 6 of the burner body 5 is an apertured disk 23, and through the opening 24 thereof is adapted to extend the hanger 20. Formed integral with the disk 23 as well as projecting vertically with respect thereto and further extending through the perforated top 6 of the burner body 5 is an arm 25 having its upper end notched at each side, as at 26. The notched end 26 of the arm 25 is mounted upon the bifurcated hook 19 of the arm 18.
When the burneris in normal position as shown in Fig. 1 the shutters 1415 are open and the disk 23 is positioned parallel with the flat face of the weight 22. It the burner should be tilted, the weight 22 will shift on the hanger 20, as indicated in Fig. 2, as the weight shifts it will engage the disk 23, shifting the same forward as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and moving the shutter 15 toward the wick tube, as the shutter 15 moves toward the wick tube it will actuate the shutter 14 to also move toward the wick tube and the shutters will eventually extend over the topof the wick 27 and snu or extinguish the flame.
What we claim is 1. A lamp extinguishing device comprising the combination with a burner body having a' removable perforated top, and a wick tube extending therethrough, of a pair of shutters pivotally connected with said top and arranged at the sides of said tube and having their lower ends geared together and capable of being shifted over the wick tube to snufl or extinguish a flame, a vertically disposed arm extending through said' top and pivotally connected to one of said shutters, a hanger carried by and depending from said top, a weight freely movable upon tlie'l'ower end of said hanger, and an apertured disk interposed between said weight and said topand throu h which extends said hanger, said disk connected to and disposed atright angles with respect to the lower end of said arm and adapted to move the latter vertically when the weight shift-s on the hanger.
2. A lamp extlnguishing device comprising the combination with a burner, of a re- 7 geared together, arranged at the sides of the wick tube and capable of being shifted over the wick tube to snuff or extinguish the flame, an actuating member connected to one of said shutters for shifting it causing thereby the simultaneous operation of the shutters, a freely movable weight suspended from said element, sa-id actuating member extending downwardly through said element, and an apertu'red disk interposed between said element and weight and connect-- ed to' said member andadapted to operate the latter when the weight moves upon its suspension means, said disks disposed at right angles with respect to'said actuating member; V
In testimony where'oi we afii-x our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
