To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL CAvANAGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vallejo, in the county of Solano and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stamping Devices for Flour-Packing Machines, of which the following is a speciticatio-n.
This invention relates to an automatic stamping device. l
The object of the present invention is to provide an automatic stamping device which may be attached to an ordinary flour packing machine for the purpose of stamping each sack as it is filled; the stamp being applied to the sack for the purpose of dating it or for the purpose of giving any other data.
A further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of apparatus so as to increase their utility, durability and etliciency.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the' accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectionon line X-X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stamp carrying means. Fig. 4 is a plan view of same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stamp tripping mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the main frame of the packer, B the feed or delivery tube, and C the elevator which is lifted at suitable time intervals into the dotted line position shown at C for the purpose of bringing the sack into filling poA sition with relation to the feed tube.
D indicates in general the stamping mechanism which is secured to the framework of the elevator C, and indicates the stamp tripping mechanism which is secured to a cross brace 2 on the main frame of the packer. The tripping mechanism consists of a double coil spring 3, centrally conneet-ed, as at 4L, and which is secured toa shaft 5 by having the ends 6 and 7 of the opposite springs formed into eye portions 8 which are secured to the shaft 5. The shaft is suitably secured to a bracket 9 which in turn is mounted upon a plate which is secured to the cross bracket 2.
The stamp proper, indicated at 10, is pivotally secured as at 11 to a spring blade 12,
suitably secured, as at 13, to an angle bracket 14 pivoted, as at 15, to brackets in a cross bar 16, which in turn is secured to the tie rods 18 of the elevator C. The spring blade 12 has secured to it a secondary spring 19 which is so positioned as to hold the stamp 10 in position when this is broughtl forward to stamp the sack. The spring blade 12 is also provided with a leather bumper 20 and a leather cam or guide portion 21 which is held in shape and position by a reinforcing strip 22 suitably secured to same.
The operation of the device will be as follows: A sack, as 23, having been placed in position on the elevator, the filling and stamping ,of same will be accomplished when the elevator is lifted into the dotted line position shown at C. The lifting of the elevator may be accomplished by the usual or vany suitable means, not here shown. The
upward movement of the elevator C brings the sack into filling position outside of the feed tube B and also forces the stamp 10 upon the spring blade 12 into Contact with an ink pad 24 which is secured to the main frame; the stamp being guided into position by a guide plate 25 secured to the cross brace 2 and a similar brace 26 on the main frame.
The cam portion 21, which is secured to the spring blade 13, being formed of leather or similar yieldable means, together with the spring 19, will allow the stamp to position itself with relation to the ink pad when it reaches the position indicated at 27. The downward movement of theelevator allows the stamp to free itself from the pad, and, when the position shown at 28 is reached,the end 141-21 of the angle bracket 14 will engage with the trip arm 4 of the tripping mechanism and will throw the stamp forward into position against the sack and stamp same. A little further downward movement of the elevator C will depress the trip arm A of the tripping mechanisminto such a position that it will release the projection 14a and allow the stamp to return into normal position; the stamp being returned into normal position by a coil spring 30 having one end secured tothe cross frame 16 and the other end to the pivot shaft 15 of the spring blade 12.
The tripping mechanism indicated at E is flexible in construction and is loosely'pivoted to the shaft 5, as shown at 8, and will allow the projection 14a to pass on the upward movement of the elevator. The projection la@ engaging with the trip arm l on the upward movement will simply lift the arm l into the dotted line position shown at 4 which allows the stamp to pass.
The leather bumper shown at 20 is prorided for the purpose of guiding the stamp upon the guide plate 25 on the upward and downward movement of the elevator. lt is also provided for the purpose of deadening the shock caused by the return of the stamp when being released from the stamping position by the flexible trip arm 1. The flexible construction of the stamp supporting mechanism, togetherl with the flexible construction of the tripping mechanism, makes it possible to apply the stamp against the sack with more or less pressure without the necessity of any complicated or positive adjusting mechanism.
The provision of a stamp of this construction makes it possible for the manufacturing firm to apply dierent kinds of data as, for instance, the date of filling, number of factory, grade of flour, etc., which is sometimes of great importance to the manufacturer for future data.
The stamping mechanism here shown is simple in construction, reliable in its actions and may be installed on any packer having a reciprocating elevator.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the apparatus are such as experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
l wish it understood that various changes 1n form, proportions and minor detalls of` construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, and that I do i not wish to limit myself to the specific design here shown.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what t I claim and desire to secure by Letter Patent isl. The combination with an elevator of a stamp pivot-ally mounted thereon, a stationi ary frame in which the elevator is slida-bly i mounted, a flexible tripping mechanism pivotally secured to the stationary frame, so i positioned as to swing out of the path of the printing mechanism on the upward movement of the elevator, but operable to throw l the printing mechanism forward against a` the spring blade, a secondary spring secured to the spring blade so positioned as to hold the stamp in parallel position with the spring blade, a'trip mechanism secured to the stationary frame, and means on the printing` mechanism which becomes engageable with the trip mechanism on the downward movement of the elevator for the purpose of swinging the stamp forward against the sack to be stamped.
An automatic stamping mechanism for packing machines comprising in combination, a feed spout, an elevator, a stationary frame in which the elevator is slidably mounted, a cross bar secured to the elevator, an angle bracket pivotally secured to the cross bar, a spring blade secured to the angle bracket, a stamp pivotally secured to the spring blade, a secondary spring secured to the spring blade so positioned as to hold the stamp in parallel position with the spring blade, a trip mechanism secured to the stationary frame, means on the printing mechanism which becomes engageable with the trip mechanism on the downward movement of the elevator for the purpose of swinging the stamp forward against the sack to be stamped, and means for returning the printing mechanism back to normal position.

An automatic stamping mechanism for packing machines comprising in combination, a feed spout, an elevator, a stationary frame in which the elevator is slidably mounted, a printing mechanism pivotally secured to the elevator, an ink pad secured to the stationary frame, a guide plate secured to the stationary frame, and a flexible tripping mechanism pivotally secured to the stationary frame so positioned as to swing out of the path of the printing mechanism en the upward movement of the elevator, but operable to throw the printing mechanism forward against the sack to be stamped on the downward movement of the elevator.
5. An automatic stamping mechanism for packing machines comprising in combination, a feed spout, an elevator, a stationary frame in which the elevator is slidably mounted, a printing mechanism pivotally secured to the elevator, an ink pad secured to the stationary frame, a guide plate secured to the stationary frame, means on the printing mechanism for guiding the stamp into contact with the ink pad, and a flexible tripping mechanism pivotally secured to the stationary frame so positioned as to swing out of the path of the printing mechanism on the upward movement of the elevator, but operable to throw the printing mechanism forward against the sack to be stamped on the downward movement of t-he elevator.

An automatic stamping mechanism for packing machines comprising in combination, a feed spout, an elevator, a stationary frame in which the elevator is slidably mounted, a printing mechanism pivotally secured to the elevator, an ink pad secured to 5 the stationary frame, a guide plate secured to the stationary frame, means on the printing mechanism for guiding the stamp into Contact with the ink pad, a flexible tripping mechanism pivotally secured to the stationary frame so positioned as to swing out of the path of the printing mechanism on the upward movement of the elevator, but operable to throw the printing mechanism forward against the sack to be stamped on the downward movement of the elevator, and a flexible bumper on the printing mechanism to receive the shock on the return movement of the printing mechanism to the guide plate.
