The present invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved inking device for'the stamping or printing member,

With the herein stated objects in View, the invention consists in a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, partlyin section; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stamping and inking mechanism; Fig. 3 is a plan view of said mechanism; 4, 5 and 6 are sectional details on the lines 4-4, 5-5 and 66, respectively, of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the actuating connection. Referring specifically to the drawings, there is shown dotted at 10 a fragment of the adding or other registering machine to which the invention is applied, so much only of the machine being illustrated as will suffice to make clear 'the connection of the invention, therewith. The machine has a crank handle 11 the movement of which actuates the mechanism by which the amount or number represented by a depressed key will be accumulated by the registering devices, and a record thereof pro- As this type of machine is well known, and its structure is immaterial to the invention, a
unnecessary. The stamping or printing attachment is operatively connected to the crank handle 11, and with this exception it is entirely independent of the machine.
Suitably supported alongside the machine 10, on the side thereof opposite the side having the crank handle 11', is mounted a horizontal base plate 12 which supports the attachment. Adjacent to the rear edge of the base plate is mounted a casting 13 having longitudinally spaced bearings 14: and 15, respectively, in which a horizontal rock shaft 16 is journaled. From the bearing i rises a standard 17 carrying at the top a stationary horizontal spindle or shaft 18 supporting an inking device. The shaft 16 projects from the bearing 1 1 a sufficient distance to take the hub 19 of a rocker arm 20 carrying the stamping or printing mem her to be presently described, said hub being fixed on the shaft so that the arm swings in a vertical plane and carries the stamping or printing member toward and from the top of the base plate 12 when the shaft is rocked. To the opposite end of the shaft:
16 is made fast a crank in the form of a slotted sector 21 to which is adjnstably connected an extension arm 22, to which latter is connected the means to be presently described whereby the attachment is actuated from the crank handle 11 of the machine 10.
The stamping or printing member carplate 23 on one side of which is mounted a plate 2& carrying the type plate 25 and its rubber backing 26. On the other side of the base plate is fixed a plate 27 having an outstanding lug 28 which seats loosely in a recess 29 in the rocker arm, and is secured therein by a pivot screw 30; The base plate is therefore pivotally supported so that it may have a slight rocking movement to ried by the rocker arm 20 comprises a base allow the type plate to come squarely I roe flu

Alongside the type plate is located a date stamp comprising endless type bands 36 passingover rollers 37 mounted on a snaft 3S, and provided with the usual hand wheels 39. The plates 23 and have registering recesses to accommodate a backing bar 40 over which the type bands pass. This backing bar has turned up ends so which support the shaft 38. From the plate rise screws 41 which pass loosely through the ends of the shaft 38, and springs 42 are coiled arouid the screws between the shaft and toe plate. These screws permit proper adjustment of the backing bar 40 relative to the type plate r The rocker arm 26 is curved and has on one side longitudinal groove t3 following the curvature of the arm. In this groove is mounted a roller 4 lcarried by the outer end of lever 45 fulcrumed on. the spindle 18 and swinging parallel. to the rocker arm.
. This lever supports and operates an inking device comprising a roller 46 journaled at its ends to the outer ends of arms a; which are pivoted at 48 to bracket arms 49 on the sides with-said distributing roller to obtain a sup ply of ink.
Adjacent to the lower edge of the plate 23. the rocker arm 20 has a plate-like enlargement 55 which is inclined relative to the plate and extends to the edge thereof to guide the roller l6 over said edge. At the ends of the plate 23 are raised and inclined portions 56. At the ends of the strokes of the roller .6, wheels 6? on the ends of the latter mount the raised portions 56 and lift the roller so that it clears the ends of the plate 23.
The distributing roller 54: has a step-bystep rotary motion to present a new surface to the roller 46 after each stroke. This motion is obtained by a ratchetwheel 58 on one end of the shaft of the roller 54 and a pawl 59 carried by a collar 60 fast on the shaft 16.
A spring 61 also engages the ratchet wheelto prevent the same fromslipping back.

The actuating connection between the crank handle 11 and the rock shaft 16 comprises the following parts: On any suitable portion of the machine 10 are mounted bracket members 62 carrying pivoted ears 63 between which are pivotally mounted bearings 64 in which is journaled a shaft 65 provided with set collars 66 abutting against said hearings to hold the shaft against lon The pivotal connection between the hearings and. the cars is made by bolts 67 passing through said parts. The pivotal connection between the ears and the bracket members is made by a pin or rivet 68. The pivotal connections enable the bracket members to be placed in various positions for attachment to the machine 10 or to a shelf or other suitable support adjacent to the machine.
On one end of the shaft 65 is made fast a crank arm 69 to the outer end of which is pivoted, as indicated at 70, a pitman 71 carrying at its outer end a clamping member 72 whereby connection is made with the crank handle 11. The clamping member has a hcadedstud 73 which seats in a slot 74 in the end of the pitman, whereby said member is pivotally and detachably connected to the pitinan. A pivoted latch hook 75 engageable with the stud prevents accidental disconnection of the clamping member from the pitman, the latch hook-being carried by the latter having a series of apertures 78- to re.-'
ceive the connecting pin 7 9. The crank arm 76 is adjustably connected to the shaft 65 so that its angularity may be varied. This connection is made by means of a sector plate 80 having a hub Slwhereby said plate is fixed on the shaft. The crank arm has an opening through which the shaft 65 passes, and carries a bolt 82 which extends through masses an 'arcuateslot 83 in the plate 80. Upon backing the nut 84: carried by the bolt 82, the
' crank arm may be swung about the shaft to the extent of the length of the slot 83, and
after the adjustment 1s made, the crank arm is fastened by the nut 84. The adjustable fastening between the parts 21 and 22 is the same as that just described.
By the hereinbefore described connection between the crank handle 11 and the rock shaft 16 the latter is actuated every time the former is swung to operate the machine 10,
the rock shaft operating the stamping mechanism in the manner already described. The adjustability of the connection enables the same to be readily attached to different other paper to make a clear impression.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various changes and modifications in the structural details may be made without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter. The invention is also not limited to adding machines, but may, with equal facility, be applied to other registering machines having a crank handle or similar actuating element.
I claim:
1. A stamping mechanism for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, means for operating the support, an inking roller mounted for travel across the stamping member, a pivoted support for the roller, and a connection between the supportsfor operating the inking roller, said connection comprising a roller carried by the secondmentioned support and a longitudinal groove in the first-mentioned support in which the roller is mounted for travel.
2. A stamping mechanisin for registering machines, comprising a stamping member, a swinging support for said member, said support having a longitudinal groove, an inking roller, and a pivoted support for the inking roller having a member which is slidable in the aforesaid groove.
3.
