Description

waited tatee GEORGE STRIOKER, OF CATAWISSA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 106,292,- dated August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIPTING- `BUC-i-CirY'l-TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STRIGKER, of Catawissa, in the countyof Columbia and in the State y of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shifting Bugg '-lops; and do hereby declare that the followngis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
V'lhe nature of my invention consists in the con struction of a rest of a bug y-tcp, and the devices by which the same is fastened to the sea-t, so that it can readily be removed, and Iatop put on.
ln order to enable others skilled iu the art to which my invention appertans tomake and use the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction andopera-tion, referring to the annexed dlawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buggy-seat with my rest attached to it.
Figure 2 is a portion of the buggy-top rail, `showing the device for fastening the saine to the seat in sec tion; and
Figure 3 is a perspective of the same. A .represents a buggy-seat, of any desired construction, having a metal bar, B, extending lat each end, and two from the rear side.
The hars B B project just far enough beyond the edges of the seat to contain cach an oblong slot, for
` the Vinsertion of the devices by which the rest and the top are secured to the dash.
The rest C is hinged in Athe center, as seen in tig. 1, so that, when not in use, it can be folded up and put away in a small compass. l
It is provided with two curved bars or supports, D D, and, at each end, is attached another curved har or support,
These bers or supports have each, at their -lower ends', a lng, a, of the same size as theslots in the bars- B B, and litinthe same. A screw, b, provided .with a square head, of about the same size as the slot, is passed from underneath through each lug ai.
To fasten the rest O to the seat, it is only necesthey, with the lugs La-, will pass through the slots in the hars B B. By now turning the said screws so as to bind under the bars B B, thatis, their heads he placed crosswise under the bars, the supports lD and E are firmly secured to the bars and to the seat.
It' the screw-threads should wear out somewhat, it will only be necessary to give the screws one or two more turns to tighten them firmly. Under no circumstauces will it become necessary to remove the -screws b b.. When it is desired to take oti' the rest, as 'it is evident, they need only be unscrewed far enough to bring their heads on a line with the slots in the bals B B, when the rest can be lifted ont.
In like manner the bottom rail G, ot' the buggy-top, is provided withsimilar lugs, a a, and screws, b b, to be inserted and fastened -to thebars B B.
By this device a buggy can hereadily shifted from a no-top tota. top-buggy, and lvice tersa, in very short space of time.
Having'thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination'of the lugs al a, screws b b, and slotted bars B B, substantially as andfor the purposes herein set forth.
2. '.Lhe rest C, made in two parts, ,hinged together, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of February, .1870.`
GEORGE STRICKERI.
