CABLE-CONNECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
Application filed July 24, 1912. Serial No. 711,287.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known thatI, BARTnoLoMnw J ULIEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cable-Connectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of means for safely connecting the bight of a rope or other cable to a traveler; and its novelty, utility and practical advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of th1s specification, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation illustrative of the device constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken at a right angle to Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the said drawings, and more particularly Figs. 1 and 2 thereof: 1 is an overhead rail, and 2, a wheeled traveler movable on said rail. The said traveler-is peculiar in that it includes two oppositely-disposed hooks 3 and 4, arranged in parallel vertical planes, and spacing bars 5 which hang pivotally between the said hooks 3 and 4, and have for their function to preclude distortion of the hooks when a load is imposed through the cable 6 thereon.
I The spacing bars 5 are pivoted at the points 9 between the spaced plates 5*, and each bar has its lower portion curved inward and snugly arranged between the hooks 3 and 4. Normally the lower ends of the spacing bars are slightly spaced apart, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1; the said lower ends being numbered 10. There is no liability of the spacing bars 5 swinging outward from between the hooks because of the snug arrangement of said bars rela tive to the hooks. When, however, it is desired to swing the bars 5 outward precedent to connecting a cable to the hooks 3 and 4, the said bars can be so swung by hand, and then after the bight of the cable rests on the hooks and at an angle thereto, the bars 5 can be similarly restored to their normal posit-ions. By preference, the hooks 3 and 4 and the spacing bars 5 are carried by the and the bight of the cable is passed inward between the hooks 3 and 4 to a point beyond the ends of the hooks, and then the cable in turned to the position shown in Figs. 1 and'2, so that both hooks 3 and 4: will rest in the bight of the cable. WVith this done the spacing bars 5 are restored to the positions shown in Figs. 1 and2, whereupon said spacing bars will assist in supporting the cable, and at the same time will prevent distortion of the hooks, as before described.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of carrying means, pendent reversely arranged hooks connected therewith and spaced apart and arranged in parallel relation, and spacing bars pivoted to the carrying means and normally occupying the space between the hooks, with their lower ends adjacent each other.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of carrying means; hooks connected with and depending from the carrying means and reversely arranged and spaced apart in parallel relation and curved downward in the direction of their length and also curved upward so that the free end of each hook rests opposite an intermediate point in the length of the other hook; and spacing bars pivotally connected to the carrying means in position to swing in the plane of the space between the hooks and snugly arranged between the hooks and having inwardly curved lower portions adapted to normally rest a slight distance apart.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BARTHOLOMEW JULIEN. Witnesses:
EMANUEL E. I-Iorrnn, GEORGE H. SToRRs.
