Description

1 To all 'whom it may concern:

' Y 1MPR`ovnMnNT 1N STICKER-Ron CONNECTIONS. v
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama Be it known time I, GEORGE M. moms, of ou City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsyl` venia', have invented a new and useful Improvement "fini Sucker-rod Connections; and Ido hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which `will enable Vothers skilled in the `art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to `the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. f
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in mode of fastening the wooden sucker-rod to the iron ferrule of the joint of an oil-well, andconsists in Iixing steel springs (one or more) in the rod,
and forming grooves or notches (one or more) in the fcrrule, with which grooves or notches the steel springs as will be hereinafter more fully `In the accompanyiugdrawingf- Figure l represents a longitudinal section, vshowing the rod. andthe -ferruie connected according tomy iiivcntion, the section, being on the line a: a: of g. 2. l, liigure 2 is a horizontal or cross-section of g. 1, on
the iiu'eg) y.
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts. i
' A is the metallic-terrine, by means of whiclrthe.
sections of the sucker-rod are joined together. 4On the `inner side of this -ferrule -Iform one or more grooves, notches, or offsets, marked B. l A
G represents t-he wooden sucker-rod.4 i D represents steel or` other metallic springs, which are mortised through tlie rod, (one or more in number.)
The mortises through the iod allow play to the ends ofthe springs, as seen in the drawing.
rlhe ends ot' the springs project, or their length is greater than the diameter of the rod.
The wooden rod is made to quite fill the ferrule,
and, when the rod is driven into the ferrule, the endsV of-thc springs curveupward, (the play referred to above allows of.this,) but when the' ends of the springs reach the groovesB they recoil and ca tch in the grooves, as seen in the drawing.
This is a cheap and most effectual method' of fastening the wooden suckerrod into the iron f'erruleE for forming the joint, and its advantages over the ordinary mode must be obvious toall. r
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent- Fastening the sucker-rod-C' to the f'errule A by means of the springs D and grooves or no1-ches B,
substantially as shown and specified.
