To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACK CoLLmswoR'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in. the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to tables and par ticularly to that type known as pedestal ta- ;bles, and has for its object to provide a means whereby the table may readily be extended and retained securely in its extended or adjusted position.

It has been found that, in tables now in use, the legs thereof which are attached by screws or other means become loosened, thus making the table very insecure. By the application of the present invention it is possible for the legs to be secured thereto with out the use of glue or other insecure attaching means, by means of a clampingaction which will readily engage the legs of the table against all movement or possible looseness.
Another objectionable feature of the tables now in use is that the top or bearing surfaces thereof often become loosened upon the pedestal, and must be permanently secured to the pedestal in order to prevent this loosening action. The present invention overcomes this feature in providing a top or bearing surface which is removable from the pedestal and at the same time is rigidly and positively secured thereto.
,Another object of the present invention is to provide an extension table of the pedestal type which will not necessitate the construction of the pedestal in sections as is now thepraotice.

Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the pedestal con-- structed, in accordance with the present invention having a large passage 11 at the lower terminal thereof, said passage havin its extremity tapered as at 12, the tapered portion opening into a reduced passage 13 which extends to the upper terminal of the. pedestal 10. The upper terminal of the pedestal has a plate 14. secured thereto by means of screws 15,, said plate being orificed to register with the opening 13 in the passage 10. The lower terminal of the pedestal 10 is closed by a plate 16 in which operates the threaded screw 17 provided at its inner terminal with a head 18, the utility of which will be hereinafter more fully described. A shaft 20 is mounted within the reduced passage 13 of the pedestal l0, and is provided at its lower terminal with a tapered enlargement 21 which conforms in shape to the tapered opening 12 of the passage 11. This tapered enlargement 21 carries a tubular portion 22 at its lower terminal which is located within the passagell in the pedestal 10, said tubular portion being provided with a plurality of slots 23 which at all N time-s register with the openings 19 of the pedestal 10. The lower terminals 24,-.of these slots are beveled. inwardly for the securing member of the legs, as will hereinafter be more fully described. A. follower plate 25 mounted for reciprocation in the passage 11 ot the pedestal 10 operates against lower extremity of the tubular extension ot the shaft 20, said follower plate being reciprocated and held in its operative position by the screw 1 7, the head 18 of which operates concentrically with said follower plate. It will be clearly seen that the movement of the screw 17', and consequently the follower plate 25, in an upward direction, will cause the shaft 20, enlargement 21 and tubular extension 22 to reciprocate in a like direction whereby the reverse movement on the part at the screw 17 and i The the follower plate 25 will cause these elements to drop by gravity.
The legs 26 radiate from the lower terminal of the pedestal and are secured in the slots 19 and 23 of the pedestal and tubular member 22, respectively. Each leg comprises a suitable body portion 26-having a reduced extension 27 formed. upon the'inn'er terminal thereof, said extension being of suflicient length to fit into the slots 19 and resttlush therein. These extensions carry securing members 28 upon their inner surfaces, said securing members being staggered with respect to the extensions 28. Each securing member 23 is provided at its lower terminal with an inwardly sloping projection 29 which against the tapered terminal of the cooperating slot 23. The extensions 28 operate in the slots 23 and are of such construction that as the follower plate forces the tubular member 22 upwardly, a clamping-action exists between the beveled lower terminals 24 of the slots 22 and the sloping projections 26 of the attaching members 28, the upper terminals of said attaching members resting against the inner surface of the head 18 adjacent to the upper terminals of the slots 19. It will readily be seen that the legs are thus clamped in their operative positions. I 7
The upper terminal of the shaft is threaded as at 30 for the reception of the table top as will be hereinafter more fully described. The table top is secured to the shaft 20 y means of a block 31 provided with an inset thimble 32 said thimble being internally threaded to receive the threaded terminal of said shaft 20. This block is surrounded by a rectangular frame comprising the longitudinal or side members 33 and the transverse or end-members 34. These transverse end members are provided with the dove-tailed grooves arranged transversely therein through which project the screws 36 which operate through the end members 34. side bars are provided with centrally disposed longitudinally extending grooves 37, said longitudinal grooves, in combinasurface of the block tion with the dove-tailed grooves 35, being adapted to receive and secure the table to the frame constituting the block 31, the side bars 33 and the end bars 34. The upper 31 has-secured thereto a transverse dividing bar 38 against which the carrying members of the top of the table abut, The table top comprises two sections 39 and 40, said sections being semicircular in form and adapted to be .supported for the purpose of inserting leaves therebetween. Each" section is provided with a downwardly extending protecting plate 41 which is adapted to seal and protect the mechanism located under the top whereby the same is secured to the pedestal. Likewise each secis adapted to restthe combination with tion is provided with a centrally disposed dove-tailed bar 42 which is adapted to be received in the grooves 35 of the end pieces 34 of the connecting frame and to be retained therein by the pressure of the set screws 36. In this manner the center portions of the table sections 39 and 40 are secured to the frame composed ofthe side members end bars 34 and the block 31, and are guided for their movement therein. As an additional attaching means, the section 40 is provided with a member 43 ,upon each side thereof and parallel to the dovetail bar 42, said bars 43 projecting beyond the inner edge. of said section. These bars are provided with the longitudinal projections 44 which are adapted to reciprocate in the grooves 37 of the side members 33 of the frame. Theopposite section 39 is provided with a pair of similar members 44 which are parallel to the central dove-tail member 42 and are provided with the inwardly extending flanges 45, said flanges being adapted to bear against the upper edges of the bars 43 carried by the opposite section 40, while the main body portion of the bars 44 lies flush with the sides of the bars 43.
From the foregoing it will be clearly understood that by loosening the set screws 36 the sections 39 and 40 may be separated to any desired distance after which the set screws may be tightened to prevent any movement on the part of the sections. The threaded engagement of the frame with the shaft 20 prevents any displacement ormovement on the part of the shaft and also 1creates an additional locking means for the egs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a table of the character described,
} a tubular pedestal internally tapered, a plate transversely of the top o said pedestal, bottom thereof, a shaft mounted within said pedestal tapered to conform to the interior thereof and secured by said plates, a plurality of radially extending legs, extensions formed with the legs and adapted to enter slots formed in the pedestal shaft, securing members on the inner surface of the extensions, a follower plate centrally of the'tubular pedestal, and clamping means threaded in the bottom plate to force the follower against the shaft and bind said legs between said shaft 2.
