PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. KIMBALL, OF TALLAPOOSA, GEORGIA.
WELL-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed December 23, 1910. Serial N 0. 598,960.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tallapoosa, in the county of Haralson and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVell-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well tops and the object thereof is the provision of a single, cheaply-c0nstructed and durable device of this character which is adapted to be seated above the ground upon the top of the ordinary walled well to take the place of the wooden structure commonly used for this purpose, and to provide a structure which may be readily adjusted for diiferent types.
Further objects of the invention will ap pear as the following description is read in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which 1- Figure 1 is a detailed vertical sectional view of a well showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the body of the device made in sections.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the wall of the well which is preferably carried up adj a cent to the ground line 2 and has seated thereon a base piece 3. This base piece is preferably circular in outline and of sufficient diameter to overlap the walls so as to prevent water running back into the well. The base piece 3 is also centrally apertured, as at 4, and surrounding the aperture is a vertical flange 5 which is tongued upon its top, as at 6, to enter the groove 7 of the adjoining body section 8. When a single body section 8 is used, as shown in Fig. 1,
the upper portion thereof is provided with a bell 9 which is seated in a recess 10 formed in the top member 11. This top member is substantially circular in outline and the recess 10 is formed by an annular flange 12 which surrounds the hell 9 and prevents lateral displacement of the top member.
The top member is also providedwith a central aperture 13 of sufficient diameter to permit the passage of the bucket, and the aperture is surrounded by a vertical flange 13 upon which rests a top 15 of any suitable design, the top being preferably pivoted on a stud 16 projecting up from the flange. The base section, the body section, and the top are, or may be, all provided with reinforcing members 17 which may be in the form of annular rods, or in any other form which will strengthen the cement of which the parts are preferably constructed.
In Fig. 2, the body section is shown as composed of a plurality of sections 18, each of which are connected by means of tongue and grooves 19 and the upper section of which is provided with a bell 20 to engage in the recess on the under side of the top. The body portion may be composed of as many sections as are found to be desirable for different purposes, such as projecting the well from the ground to the first or second floors of a building.
Having thus described I claim as new is A well top comprising an annular base having a flange adapted to assume a horizontal position and a flange adapted to assume a vertical position and formed with a circumscribing groove in its upper edge portion, a cylinder mounted on said base and provided with an annular tongue snugly fitting in said groove and provided on its upper end with a concentrically enlarged wall, a cap piece comprising an annular body having a depending flange to engage the concentrically enlarged wall and an upstanding flange providing an outlet, said upstanding flange being formed with a pivot ear, and a member hinged to said pivot ear adapted to abut against said upstanding flange and closing said outlet, the entire well top being formed of solidified plastic ma terial reinforced by members embedded therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. KIMBALL. lVitnesses A. V. Hown, H. P. BAXLEY.
