' N0..104.402. Patented June 2-1 1.870;
Jag imam: as;
top of the said-cant HORACE omr ron ALEXANDER, or NEW YORK,1N.'Y.
Letters Patent No; 104,402, dated June .21, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY- CAPS IOK CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specificationw Figure 1 is a top view of my improved can-cap. Figure. 2 1s a top View of aQmodified. form of the a same.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same,
taken through the line a; x, fig. 2. v 4 Sfignilarletters of reference indicate corresponding par v f My invention hasfor its object to furnish an improved safety-cap for cans, which shall be simple in construction, efl'ective in operation, and convenient in f; r
' E orpart B, to rest upon the edge of the lower part The upper part of the sides use and It consists in the can-cap constructed as hereinafter more may described. l A is the lower part of the cap,.the base flange of which is designed to be securely soldered to the top of the can, directly-aver the orifice or opening in the said The part A is made of a disk of metal, in the center of which is spun or struckup, a tubular socket','--the sides of which may be made straight or tapering.
a are the fastenings, which may be formed by slit- -ting the edges of the flange of the base part A, and turning the parts between the slits up, as shown in a the drawing, to form the said lips, loops, or catches,
or small segments may be cut from the opposite edges of the flange of the base part A, to form a' straight edge, and the parts along which the straight edges Z me this 10th day of February, 1870.-
have been formed may be turned up to form long lips, loops, or catches a, as shown in fig.'2.
The top of the part A is grooved around the edge, as shown in fig; 3, to serve as a guide to the knife when opening the can."
' B. is the upper part or top of the cup, which is formed by spinning or striking up the central part of a circular'disk, to form atnbular socket to fit upon the projecting part of theipart A. The diameter of thebase flange of the upper partB is such that it may fit into the bends of the lips, loops, or catchesa' of the partA. The outer edge ofthe base flange of the part}; notched when the catches a are formed by slittihgthe base flange of the part A, or trimmed ed to a straight edge when the catches a, are made long, shown in fig. 2, to'allow it to be passed down over the "said; ears, catches, or fastenings a/J Bythis construe:
tioirby turning the upper part B partly around, when it has been pressed down-to its place upon thepart A, the nnnotched or untrimmed part of the base flange oi the par't'B will pass into the bends of the catches a, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, and securely fasten the part B to the part A;
' A thin disk, 0, of cork, rubber, or other suitable material may be inserted in the upper part of the 02:2
to. guard against leakage. of the top part Bmaybe slightly grooved, as shown in fig. 3, to receive and retain the edge of the disk 0, to keep the said disk in place when the part B is detached from the lower. part A.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent- K A fastening device for. cans, formed of two sheetlnetal disks upset and shaped to form caps, the one fitting over the' other, the .flanges of the inner being turned over at two pqints to form lips aand the flange of theonter cut away at corresponding points to per1 mit its entrance under the lips and theinterlocking of the two, as shownand described.
' The above specification of my invention signed by HORACE CLIFTON ALEXANDER. Witnesses:
Geo. W. MABEE, JAMES T. GRAHAM.
