UNITED STATES LESLIE G. BOWEN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
OUTLET-BOX HANGER.
Specification of Letters mama Application filed Kay 24,
Patented Oct. 29, 191 2. 1912. Serial in. 699,456.
T 0 all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, LESLIE G. Bowen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Outlet-Box Hangers, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hangers or supports for conduit outlet boxes and has particular application todevices of the class set forth for supporting an outlet box upon a lamp fixture such, for instance, as the combination fixtures employed in gas and electric illuminations.
In carrying out the resent invention, it is my purpose to provi e a hanger whereby, the outlet box of the conduit may be securely held to the pipe and which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, ellicicncy and durability coupled with cheap ness in cost, in manufacture and installation.
Furthermore, I aim to provide a hanger or support for the outlet boxes of electric current carrying wire conduits which may be clamped to the pipe and adjusted to the desired position thereon.
lVith the above recited objects in view and others of a like nature, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination fixture showing the conduit box supported thereon by means of my improved hanger; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the hanger detached from the box.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustrative purposes, the ban r is shown as applied to a combination xture and in this connection, I wish to be understood that the invention is not limited, in its useful application, to any particular form of fixture, as the same is applicable to electric light fixtures-alone.
Referrin now to the accompanying drawing in detail, A indicates the gas conducting pipe terminating at one extremity in a burner 1 having the free end connected to the. gas main 2, while B denotes the sleeve tube disposed concentrically of the gas conducting pipe and housing the electric current carrying wires a, said tube having connected to its lower end beneath the gas burner 1, an electric lamp 3.
C designates the outlet box of any usual or preferred construction" and from which the electric current carrying wires are taken to the lamp 3, as is well known.
The conduit box C is supported upon the gas conducting pipe A by means of my improved hanger or support designated as an entirety by the letter D. This hanger or support as shown, consists of a body portion 4 preferably constructed of metal and formed adjacent to one end to provide an integral segmental strip 5 provided at its free ends with laterally extending wings 6 equipped with right-angularly disposed attaching flanges 7 provided with openings alining with openings in the proximate portion of the box to receive screws or bolts 8 whereby, the hanger may be securely fastened to the box. Contiguous the segmental strip, the body 1 is formed to provide a (:ir-
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. The outlet box is positioned upon the pipe in the usual manner and the hanger or support is then fastened to the respective part of the box by means of the attaching flanges 7 and screws or bolts 8, the circular holding strip 9 having been disposed about the pipe. lVith the holding strip embracing the pipe, the outlet box may be adjusted to the desired position thereon incident to the resilient nature of the holding strip and after such position has been determined, the bolt 11 is applied to the fastening flanges 10' to draw said flanges together so as to produce a clamping action upon the pipe.
It will be seen that the hanger or support is coaxial with the outlet box so that the hanger and outlet box may have the pipe as a common center, thereby holding the outlet box in its proper position upon the pipe.
I claim:
1. An outlet box hanger comprising a body formed to provide a segmental strip and a split circular holding strip, wings integral with said segmental stri and projecting laterally therefrom, attachlng flanges on said wings and at right angles thereto,
I and fastening flanges intpgral with the adjacent ends of said holding strip adapted to I with that of the outlet box, attaching flanges receive a securing element. on said wings, and fastening flanges on said 2. An outlet box hanger comprising a holding strip, said holding strip being conbody formed to provide a segmental strip structed of resilient material and designed 15 5 and a split circular holding strip, attachto embrace a. pipe to support the outlet box.
ing flan es on said segmental strip, and fas- In testimony whereof I affix my signature tening anges on said holding strip. in presence of two witnesses.
3. An outlet box hanger comprising a LESLIE Gr. BOWEN. body formed to provide a segmental strip Witnesses: 10 and a split circular holding strip and de- Mrs. L. BOWEN,
