Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
lihidlwiwm'tt may I Be. it known that .13, CABL- citimenof the United States,- resi-di-nig 1n the specification.-
My invention relates to what called" aninuisible joint for the frames of wall beds, and the like.
It consists of'a twc-pant bed frame, the meeting ends of whichzabut smoothly, with i a tongue fixed in one of the parts and extending. into the other ortion, which is slotted frame having a pin passing through the slot in the tongue, may slide thereon. The tongue is-cut away in such shape that when the two are separated,-'the second member separate of the frame mayv be turned at right angles with the-first. The parts are closable and locked together without theuse of sleeves,
claimed, having reference to the accompany-i ing drawings, in which- Figure 1 1s a iew of the bed frame in its normal osition. Fig. 2' shows the parts before being bentto an angle wlth each other. Fig.- 3 shows the parts separated and bent at right angles.
In the manufacture of wallbed's, 'itis desirable to so construct'the foot board that iti's in its normal osition when the bed is horizontal, and w ich may be provided with a joint allowing-a portion of it to turn into a vertical position when, the bed is turned up to stand vertically; the horizontall turned space etween well against which the bed is turned, which serves toreceive the mattress, bed clothes,
etcii, while the jointed extension hangs vertica y.
In carrying out my inventionlprefer to make the exterior frame of the bed of tubular rods. I k
A and B represent tubular sections of a bed frame; these sections being of equal diameter and so cut that they. shut smoothly without ofi'sets of any kind. In the lower portion serving to form a e main po'rt1on and the provided with a baseBfitting the interior vof the tube -B,'an'd so-constructed that it may be secured by pouring melted metal around slidable'agalinst "the interior of the tube A,
while' the other projecting edge may slide in a slot 5, which is formedin the tube A forfthat purpose, as shown. 4
The. tongue 2 has a slot 6 made in it, and {this slot is slidable upon a pin 7 fixed in the part A at such a point that when the two portions of the tube aredrawn apart to the limit allowed by the slot 6 and pin 7, .the part A may be turned at substantially right angles with the part B. In order to 'allow, this, a corner of the tongue 2 is rounded or cut-away as at 8, ona' radius about the pin 7, and this allows the tongue to. turn within the closed side of the part A while the opposite side fits into the slot orchannel 5.
That portion-of the tongue which enters-the slot is also notched, as shownat 9, and when the parts A and B are turned tostand at right angles with each other, the notch 9 Wlll', fit against the upper part of theslot 5 of the tube A. This allows, the tongue to be made o'f-a sufficient width, so that while one edge of it slides within the tube A, the 'opposlte edge of the lower part extends out ;flush with the outer circumference of the tube, while that portion which is slidable within the tube is of a width equal to the width of the interior diameter thereof.
It will be seen that by this construction, when the parts A and B are in their normal closed position, only a lineof division can be'seen; it notbing necessary to employ any collar, sleeve, or other (part to hold them in place; the tongue exten ing into the tube A. and holding the parts rigid, while the edge which projects into the slot closes this, so that it forms a complete, continuous tube.
In wall beds it is desirable that when the bed is in an upright position it shall occupy as little space as possible. This hin e allows the legs of the foot and to remain in a vertical position when the bed is in an upright position and if properly adjusted to the port ion of the tube B, here shown, I fix a tongue 2. ,This. tongue ispreferably tube. One edge of the part 2 will thus be frame of the bed they will be folded inside of it when the bed is upright.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A joint for tubular frames, said joint including two abutting tubes, one of which has an open slot upon one end, a flat tongue fixed in the other tube extending into the slotted one, and slidable therein, said tongue having a slot, and a pin fixed in first-mentioned tube upon which it is movable, and
the upper end of the tongue having a circular curvature on the radius of the pin.
2. A joint fortubular frames, consisting of two tubes of equal diameter adapted to abut. against each other, and one of said I tubes having a slotformed in one end, a
-tong! a fixed in the opposing tube, one portion of which tongue is sli ble within the slotted .tube, and the other portion having a wid'th adapted to fit and close the slot, said tongue having a longitudinally central slot,
a pin passing through the slotted tube upon which the tongue 1s slidable, said tongue having a notch formed in its edge adapted to engage with the slot of the tube when the parts are turned at right angles with each other. p
3. A hinge comprising a hollow member provided atone end Wlth a slot, a pin in said member arranged transversely of said slot, a second member, an ear projecting from said member provided with a longitudinal slot engaging said pin, and a shoulder on said ear ada ted to engagethe outer sur face of the ho low member directly below said slot and hold the two members at a given angle to'each other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
