Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portieres, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in open work portieres, such as are commonly made of leather or similar flexible material, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of such portieres, by which they can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and will yet present a pleasing and attractive appearance.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a portiere constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar enlarged view of a portion thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the links thereof extended; Fig. 4 is a similar view of another link.

Referring to the drawing, '1 indicates a rod upon which the portiere is suspended. Said portiere is constructed principally of segments or links 2, 3, which are of two forms. Each link of either form consists of a strip of leather or similar material having a contracted middle portion 4, its two halves being symmetrical. At each end it is formed with an aperture, which in the form of a link shown in Fig. 3, is circular, as shown at 5, the terminal portions 6 of said link being also circular, and the edges thereof being at a constant distance from the apertures. In the form of link shown in Fig. 4., the terminal apertures 7 are triangular. Between the middle and each end, each link of either figure is formed with a diamondshaped aperture 8, and, in that shown in Fig. 3, the edges of the link are, between the middle and terminal portions, parallel with the sides of said apertures 8. In the form shown in Fig. 4, these edges between the middle and the ends are straight and parallel with each other.

tures of an adjacent folded link, and then folding ittogether about the middle, so that its middle portion engages said terminal apertures. The links are thus connected to form chains or bands.

The links shown in Fig. at are particularly adapted to form hangers, to each of which, at the end 9, may be attached a single link of the form shown in Fig. 3, to the lower portion of which link may be also attached a tassel 10. The links of the form shown in Fig. 3 are particularly well adapted for connections in lines extending crosswise of each other. For this purpose the ends of two links are placed overlapping or in register with each other, so that the circular apertures in said ends register, and two other links are then inserted through said apertures and folded therein about their middle portions. It is for this reason that the ends of the links surrounding said circular apertures are made with edges circular and at a uniform distance from the apertures, so that, when they are connected at different angles, and the other links are attached thereto, all of said links will appear to radiate from a common circle, and the connected links will present a uniform and regular appearance.

I claim A device of the class described, comprising links, each formed with a contracted middle portion and with apertured ends, two of said links having their terminal apertures registering with each other, and the links extending from said apertures approximately at right angles, and two other links having their middle portions passing through said four apertures and extending substantially in line with the first-named links, substantially as described.
