Description

S. HARRIS (NOW BY MARRIAGE S. ROSENTOVBR). COLLAR. APPLICATION FILED MAR, 19, 1910;

ATTORNEYS COLUMBIA PLANDGRAPH c0., WASHINGTON, n. :4
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH HARRIS, (NOW BY MARRIAGE SARAH ROSENTOVER,) OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1912.
Original application filed January 28, 1909, Serial No. 475,035. Divided. and. this application filed March 19, 1910. Seriai No. 550,402.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, SARAH, I-IARRIS, (now by marriage SARAH ROSENTOVER,) a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to collars and has reference more particularly to a collar com prising a band and an attached turn over top, the band being provided with an underlapping extension at one end, and a button shank receiving hole open to the lower edge of the band through a passage having closely contiguous vertical sides.
The object of the invention is to provide a collar which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which can be buttoned and unbuttoned without difficulty, and with greater ease than is possible with the present form of collar generally used, and which, when buttoned, will remain securely in position and tends to resist distortion or the separation of the ends of the collar.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification. in which the figure is a perspective view showing the ends of a collar constituting an embodiment of my invention.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention it should be noted that the present application forms a division of the parent application filed January 29, 1909, under the Serial Number 475,035. In my earlier application I disclosed different forms of collars having button shank receiving holes formed in the butt-oning tabs or band extensions thereof, provided with slits extended to the edges of the buttoning tabs or bands. These forms included one in which the slit was extended at substantially right angles to the length of the button shank receiving hole, to the lower edge of the tab or band, so that the slit itself was approximately vertical. The present application covers this last mentioned modified form of my invention. The collar is buttoned and unbuttoned as described in my earlier application, and the differences between the present device and those shown in the earlier application are structural only, the function remaining the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown a collar in which the collar band 10 terminates in the usual end extensions, tabs or flaps 11. There is provided with the collar a top 12, folded with respect to the band, the extensions or flaps 11 constituting respectively the underlying and overlying parts. While I have shown them both provided with the special form of button shank receiving hole and entrance slit which constitute a part of my invention, one only may be so provided, if desired, the other band extension or flap in that case, having any ordinary or preferred form of button hole.
The band extensions 11 have butt-on shank receiving holes 13 therein which may, as shown, he elongated horizontally or longitudinally of the collar, and extending vertically or normal to the lower edge of the band is a slit let having closely contiguous edges, said slit being open at its upper end to the button shank receiving opening and at its lower end extends through the edge of the band, whereby a passage is formed through which the button shank may be passed into its opening 13. The walls of the slit being closely contiguous, they must be sprung apart by the passage of the shank, and therefore the button will be retained with greater security. The corners at the end of the slit are cut away or somewhat rounded to facilitate the entry of the button shank as will be readily understood.
The position of the entrance slit with relation to the end of the turn over top will of course depend upon the style of the collar. In the drawing, the entrance slit is at approximately the end edge of the top, but it will be understood that in the claims reference to the edge of the band includes the band and its end extension or extensions.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a collar, a band, an attached turnover top, the band provided with an underlapping extension at one end and a button shank receiving hole with a substantially straight vertical passage having closely contiguous sides and extending from the hole through the lower edge of the band.
2. In a collar, a band an attached turnover top, the band provided with a flap extension at one end adapted to underlap the top at the other end of the band and to be held down thereby, said extension having a button shank receiving hole therein, with a vertical passage having closely contiguous sides and extending from the hole through the lower edge 01": the hand, the corners at the entrance to said passage being cut away. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SARAH HARRIS. Witnesses:
MAXWELLS HARRIS, HERMAN HARRIS.
