PATENT @FFftlE.
ISIDOBE FSIDIQEEY KALLIS AND JOSEPH BERG, OF NEW YQRK, N. Y.
HAT-FORM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lemons SIDNEYKAL LE and JosnrI-r Buns, citizens of theUnited States, residing at J1 Mercer street, New York, in the county of New York and State of -New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Forms; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for conveniently securing hats or the like in trunks, hat boxes and trays.
The object of the invention is to provide a collapsible device, for the purpose specified, and one when collapsed can be folded flat and the parts locked to prevent them from interfering with articlesin the trunk.
A further object of the invention is'to pro-- vide a collapsible hat support with a top, so asto effectually reinforce the side members and thereby form a rigid and substantial structure to which a hat may be securely fastened, and to prevent it from becoming displaced by the jolting, incident to transportation.
The invention also relates to improvements in the specific details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of our invention, in position to receive a hat. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the support being collapsed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, of Fig. 1.
The hat-box disclosed is of pyramid shape, and comprises a base 1, two side members 2 and 3, and a flap 1, the latter forming an upper section. The base, side members, and flap or upper section, are each formed of separate pieces of stiff material, preferably of card board, and over the outer surface of these separate pieces is a continuous piece of lining of fabric, or other material 5. The edges of the lining 5, are folded over the pieces of card board, as indicated at 7, and on the inner surface of said card board pieces, and overlapping the turned in edges of the lining 5, is a continuous piece of lin- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing of fabric or other suitable material 8. At the meeting ends of the base, sides and upper section, the inner and outer linings 5 and 8, are brought together and pasted or otherwise secured together to form hinge joints, as shown at 9. By this construction the device is rendered susceptible of being readily folded, or the various members eX- tended to quickly form a support.
The flap or upper section t, forms a continuation of the side member 2, and the latter is provided with a female member 10, of a fastening device, the male member 12. being secured near the upper end of the side member Near the bottom of the side member 3, is a male member 13, of a fastening device, with which the female member 10, on the flap or upper section, cooperates to fasten the parts together when the support is collapsed.
The paste-board forming part of the side members 2 and 3, is formed with plurality of openings 14-, and the linings 5 and 8, are pressed into the openings and the adjacent pieces are pasted together, whereby to provide means to receive pins to hold a hat in position on the support, when the device is 111 use.
hen using the improvement, the base 1,
is fastened to the trunk or hat box, and.
the two side members 2 and 3, are raised to bring their upper ends together, then the upper section 4:, is folded over the upper end of the side member 3, and fastened by the fastening 10 and 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When not in use, the fastening device 10 and 12, is released, the side member 3, i folded on the base 1, and the side member 2, and the upper section 4., are folded on the side member 3, the female fastening member 12, is fitted over the male fastenirg member 13, so that the various sections forming the support cannot become displaced. They are so packed that little space is occupied, and articles of apparel, etc, may be conveniently packed over the f lded members.
Our invention not only affords a convenient means for supporting a hat, but by reason of the structure being hollow and closed at its upper end, a receptacle is provided for small articles of wearing apparel, which is of convenience when packing a trunk, particularly when hats are carried.
What we claim is mag 1. A collapsible hat support comprising a base, two side members hinged to the base, said side members having openings for the passage of pins to secure a hat, a flap hinged to the upper end of one of the side members and folded over the upper end of the adjacent side member, and a fastening ]device for locking the flap to the side mem- 2. A collapsible hat support comprising a base, two side members hinged to the base, said side members having openings, a flap hinged to the upper end of one of the side members and folded over the upper end of i the ad acent side member, and a llnlng on the sections, said lining forming hinges and covering the openings, the lining over the openings forming weak spots on the side members for the passage of pins.
3. A collapsible hat support comprising a base, two side members hinged to the base and inclining toward each other and brought together at their upper ends, a flap hinged to the upper end of one of theside members and folded over the upper end of the adjacent side member, and a fastening device for locking the flap to the side member.
4. A collapsible hat support comprising a base, two side members inclined toward each other and each of which is formed with openings, a flap at the end of one of the side members, a lining covering on the inside and outside of the base, side members a member of a fastening device near the free end of one of the side members, a sec- 0nd member of a fastening device near the hinged end of said side member, a flap hinged to one of the side members and adapted to be folded over the free end'of the side member on which the fastening members are secured, a member of a fastening device secured to the flap and adapted to engage with the fastening member near the free end of the side member when the hat support is set up,the said fastening member on the flap also engaging with the fastening member near the hinge connection of the side member when thehat support is in folded condition. 1
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
