To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN BUsHwICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maspeth, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Folding Hand- Bags; and I do declare theffollowing, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

rllhis invention relates to improvements in hand bags or satchels of a class which may be converted into different sizes by folding and fastening its parts. y p

, The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be folded to present the appearance of a comparatively small hand bag provided with flap closed pockets on opposite sides and which may be extended when desired to form a comparatively large basket, such asis used for marketing andthe like.

In the embodiment illustrated, a receptacle is shown constructed to be folded to present the appearance of a handbag and to be extended to forma basket..v This recep tacle iscomposed of, as is shown clearly in Fig. 7 two flexibly connected central sections 1 and 2 adapted, when the device is extended, to form the bottom of a basket. These section 1 and 2 are formed exactly alike, being of the same shape and size, and are connected together by a strip of leather 3, or other suitable material. Each of these sections 1 and2 is provided at its opposite side edges with flaps 4 and 5, here shown with rounded corners and equipped with fastening elements 6 on their outer faces vfor co- Operation with other fastening elements to be hereinafter described.

Flexbly connected to the free end ofthe section 2 is an end member 7 which flares outwardly toward its free end and has secured to its opposite sides wings 8 and 9 which are flexibly connected with said member Tand are for a purpose to be described.

Flexibly secured to the free end of section 1 is an end member l0 corresponding in shape and size to the member 7 andhaving wingsll and 12 flexibly connected with its opposite side edges, said wings being of the same shape and size as the wings 8 and 9 of the member 7 The wings 8 and 9 have their free side Aedges cut away for a portion of their length, about one half more or less, forming on the other half of the edges tongues 13 which extend from the bottom or lower end of the wings to a point midway the height thereof, the outer ends of said tongues being inclined downwardly and inwardly as shown at 14.

The wings 11 and 12 have their free side edges cut away on the lower half thereof forming tongues 15 at the upper half which terminate at their lower ends in upwardly and inwardly inclined faces 16,l which are adapted to interlock' with formed on the tongues of the wings 8 and 9 when the device is set up to form a basket.` The inclined ends of the tongues 13 on the wings 8 and 9 are adapted to extend under the correspondingly shaped ends of the tongues 15 on the wings 11 and 12, as is shownclearly in Figs. 5 and 7.' The tongues 13 on the wings 8 and 9 are here shown provided on their outer faces near their outer ends with fastening elements 17 which are adapted to coperate with complementary the inclined faces fastening elements 18 on the cutaway edges of the wings 11 and 12 near their lower ends, whereby the tongues 13 of the wings 8 and 9 are adapted to extend under the cutaway edges of the wings 11 and 12 and the tongues 15 of said wings 11 and 12 extend under the cutaway edges of the wings 8 and 9, and said edges areprovided near their upper faces with coperating co1nplementary fastening elements 20 and 21 respectively, whereby rigid side members for the basket are formed when the device is converted into a basket, as is shown clearly in Fig. L1. YWhenv theV parts of thedevice are in open position, as 'shown in Fig. 7 and it is desired to convert itl into a basket, the wings 8 and 11 are `moved'upwardly and inwardly in tongues and the cutaway side edges as above described and the fastening-elements onthe lower edges'of said Wings are engagedV with and 2, thereby forming one side of the basket, the Vmembers 7 and 10 forming the ends thereof. The wings 9 and 12 are positioned similarly to the wings 8 and 11 and the free ends thereof are interlockingly engaged and secured by the coperating fastening elements carried thereby, the lower edges of said wings being secured to the flaps 5 at-the other side of the bottom sections 1 and 2.' When the parts are in this position, the pockets 23 and 26 extend downwardly onthe outer faces of the end members 7 and 10 of the basket, and may be used for carrying small articles. The handles 35 and 36 span the basket from opposite sides and may be used for carrying it.

' When it is desired to convert the basket into the form of a handbag as shown in Fig. 1, the free edges of the wings 8 and 11 and 9 and 12 respectively are disconnected and their lower edges are disconnected from the flaps on the bottom sections l and 2. The wings 8 and 9 and 11v and 12 are then folded inwardly toward each other, and the handles are extended outwardly. The sections 1 and 2 are then folded inwardly which brings the pocket members together and the handles are passed outwardly at opposite ends and the flap 31 is secured to the pocket 23 by thecoperating fastening elements thereon and the fastening elements on the iiaps 24 are engaged with the complementary fastening elements on the flaps 2S and 29 on the pocket 26, thereby forming a device having the appearance of a handbag and the pockets 23 and 26 are arranged on the outer faces of the hand bag and may be used for retaining such articles as will fit in them.

From the above description, it will be obvious that the device when folded presents a neat compact appearance and occupies very little space and may be readily carried by a housewife or other person, and afterward converted into a basket for conveying home marketing and other purchases.

This receptacle may be constructed of any suitable material, either leather, canvas, straw, or any material which may be suitable or desirable.

I claim as my invention 1. A convertible hand bag and basket comprising iiexibly connected bottom sections, end members iieXibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, and interlocking means carried by said wings for fastening said wings together. j

2. A convertible hand bag and basket comprising iieXibly connected bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on the respective end members having interlockingjelements and coperating fastening elements for securing the wings of one end member to those of the other end member, and means for connect ing said wings with said bottom sections.

8. A convertible hand bag and basket comprising exibly connected bottom sections, end members fiexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on the respective end members having interlocking tongues and coperating fastening elements for securing the wings of one end member to those of the other end member, and means for detachably connecting said wings with said bottom sections.

A convertible hand bag and basket comprising fiexiblyl connected bottom sections, end members iiexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on one end member having the upper portion of their free end edges cut away and the wings on the other end member having the lower portion of their free end edges cut away to form interlocking means for connecting said wings together, fastening elements for locking said wings in connected position, and means for detachably connecting said wings and bottom sections.

5. A convertible hand bag and basket comprising flexibly connected bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on one end member having the upper portion of their free end edges cut away and the wings on the other end member having the lower portion of their free end edgesl out away to form interlocking tongues, said tongues having their inner ends inclined downwardly and inwardly and adapted for interlocking engagement to hold said wings in connected relation, means for locking said wings in connected position, and means for detachably connecting said wings and bottom sections.

A convertible hand bag and basket comprising flexibly connected bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on the respective end members having interlocking elements and coperating fastening elements for securing the wings of one end member to those of the other end member, said bottom sections having flaps flexibly connected with their side edges and coperating fastening elements on said flaps and wings for securing them detachably together.

A convertible hand bag and basket comprising flexibly' connected" bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, the wings on the respective side edges of each end member and shaped to correspond therewith, means carried by said wings for fastening them together, and means for detachably connecting the bottom edges of said wings with the side edges of said bottom sections.

A convertible handbag and basket comprising flexibly connected bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, means carried by said wings for fastening them together, and pockets flexibly connected at their upper ends with the upper ends of said end members.

A convertible hand bag and basket comprising flexibly connected bottom sections, end members flexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, means carried by said wings for fastening them together, pockets flexibly connected at their upper ends with the upper ends of said end members, said pockets being provided on their side edges with flaps, and complementary fastening members on the flaps of the respective pockets for securing the pocket to the pocket at the other end when the device is in collapsed position to form a hand bag.

A convertible hand bag and basket comprising flexibly connected bottom sections, end members fiexibly connected with the free ends of said bottom sections, wings foldably connected to the side edges of each end member, and means carried by said wings for fastening them together, pockets flexibly connected at their upper ends with the upper ends of said end members, said pockets being provided on their side edges with flaps, complementary fastening members on the fiaps of the respective pockets at one end for securing the pocket to the pocket at the other end when the device is in collapsed position to form a hand bag, and a flap secured to the upper end of one end member, said flap and the pocket on the other end member havingcomplementary fastening elements for holding the device in folded position.
