Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27,1912.
Application filed August 26, 1911. Serial No. 646,145.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AARON Honvrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in slippers and has for its object the provision of a slipper of improved construction and efiicient and comfortable in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a slipper embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same, Fig. 8 is a section taken on line mm of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of construction,
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view corresponding to Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a section taken on line y-y of Fig. 4.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, comprises a sole piece 1 provided with an inner lining 2 as indicated. Vamp pieces 3 are secured to the forward front edges of sole piece 1 as indicated and are themselves secured together at their upper outer edges as shown, this completing the slipper. The vamp pieces 3 are secured to sole piece 1 edge to edge by means of zigzag stitches 4 as shown, and their upper outer edges are secured together side by side by stitches 5 passing through both edges as shown. This form of connection furnishes a smooth and durable juncture with the sole piece and also provides a sort of lip or ridge by means of which the slippers may be readily grasped by the hand.
The modified form of construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 comprises a memher, the rear portion 6 of which is formed into the heel portion of a sole piece and the front portion of which is split, separated and cut to form the vamp portions The upper outer edges of vamp portions 7 are secured together side by side as before by means of stitches 8 passing therethrough and a front sole portion 9 is inserted in said slit and secured therein by means of zigzag stitches as shown.
Either of the slippers above set forth may be made without a last, thus greatly simplifying the manufacture.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the eXact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A slipper comprising a sole piece and vamp pieces, the upper edges of said vamp pieces being secured together side by side to form a central vertical longitudinal ridge at the top of the vamp portion of the slipper and adapted to be grasped in the hand, substantially as described.
2. A slipper comprising a piece of material cut at the rear to form a sole piece and split at front and cut to form vamp pieces, said vamp pieces being secured together at their upper outer edges; and a front sole piece secured in said split, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HELEN F. LILLIS, JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs.
