IMPROVED HAWSE-HOLE COVER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,630, dated May 31, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT LIsToN, ofAlbany, in the county of Albany and State o New York, have invented a new and Improved Hawse-Hole Cover; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for closing the hawse-holes of vessels, to keep the water from beating upon the deck; and consists in the arrangement upon the inside of the bulwarks of a circular or other shaped cover, composed of two equal parts, hinged at the opposite sides, and meeting at J(he center, where recesses are formed in the edge for iitting snugly around the two parts of the link of the cable when closed.

One part is provided with a latch, which swings down into catches on both parts to hold them closed, and both are provided with packing substance on the side toward the hole; also, with hinge-joints, which may be readily disconnected in cases of emergency.

A represents the wallof the hawse-hole, and B the anchor-chain. O and O represent the two parts of the cover. They are provided with ears D, by which they are connected to projections E from the side of the bulwarks by the bolts F, which are dropped in from the top in a way to admit them to be readily removed in case theitwo parts of the door cannot be readily opened.

G is a latch, pivoted to one part ot' the cover, and shaped so as to bend around the link lof the chain and drop behind catches H to hold them securely in the closedposition. These two parts of the coverhave recesses in the meeting edges, arranged for the reception of a link of the chain and tted to close snugly around it, and they are provided with india-rubber or other suitable sheets of packing, K, on the sides, bearing against the end wall ot' the hole. One of the said sheets laps under the opposite part of the cover a short distance to break the joint, and thereby more effectively exclude the water.

This arrangement of covering apparatus is more convenient and durable than the plugs commonly employed for the purpose, and cannot fail of being readily opened in cases of great haste, as it is only required to swing the latch G up to permit the opening ofthe cover; or, if the latch should bind, the bolts F, one or both, may be readily knocked out and the cover removed.

Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hawse-hole cover consisting of the parts C O', provided with.the latch G, catches H, packing K, and notches in the edges for the chain-links, arranged for closing over the hole, and against the chain-link and on detachable hinges, all substantially as specified.
