THOMAS BAUG-I-IMAN, OF HARRISON CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
D TIE ANDl RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
o PatenteaMay 21, 1912.
Application filed March 6, 1912. Serial No. 681,988.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs BAUGHMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harrison City, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are, rst, to provide a strong and durable metallic tie having novel seats for the base flanges of rails; second, to furnish the tie with rail fasteners for positively retaining rails upon the seats of said` tie; third, to provide rail fasteners that prevent vertical and lateral displacement of rails and maintain the gage of a track, and fourth, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is inexpensive to manufacture and highly efficienty for steam and electric railways.
` With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a tie in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the same, showing a rail mounted thereon, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the same showing the rail in horizontal section.
A tie in accordancewith this invention comprises a metallic body l having the same dimensions as an ordinary wooden tie. The body of the tie, adjacent to each end thereof, is provided with a transverse groove forming a seat for the base flanges 3 of a rail 4. The vertical walls 5 of the groove 2 prevent lateral displacement of the rail 4 relatively to the tie.
The tie l, at each end thereof, has a longitudinal opening 6 extending from the end of the tie to the groove 2, said opening being in longitudinal alinementk with a socket 7 formed in the inner wall of the groove 2. The opening 6 and the socket 7 receive a fiat fastener member 8 having the outer end thereof bent upwardly or provided with a handle 9, whereby said fastener member can be easily moved out of the opening 6 and the socket 7. The fastener member extends through the slot l0 provided therefor in the web 1l of the rail 4, said slot being arranged adjacent to the base flanges 3 of the rail, whereby the base flanges .will be locked within the groove 2.
To prevent displacement of the fastener member 8 relatively to the tie, a set screw 12 is screwed into the top of the tie to engage the top of the fastener member and in this manner prevent said fastener from shifting within the opening 6 and the socket 7 tore# lease the rail 4 seated upon the bottom of the groove 2.
From the foregoing it will be observed that it is only necessary to provide the web 11 of the rail with the opening 10 and that the fastener member can `.be easily and quickly placed in position for positively holding the rail.
I would have it understood that the structural elements of my invention are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails having the webs thereof provided with openings adjacent to the base f ianges of said rails, of an oblong tie body having the top thereof provided with trans` y THOMAS BAUGHMAN.
