UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. GALLAGHER, OF GLEN RIDGE, NEW JERSEY, AND HARRY JONES, OF SUFFER-N, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Application filed June 1, 1911. Serial No. 630,715.
and State of New Jersey, and HARRY J oNEs,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Suifern, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in garment hangers, and more particularly to that type thereof designed to support both the coat and trousers, the object being to so construct and arrange a device of this kind or character in such a way that the weight of the coat, when supported therein, will act to clamp the trousers or other garment and hold the same therein more securely than would otherwise be the case.
Vith the objects above enumerated in view, our invention consists in the improved garment hanger illustrated in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification, and claimed in the clauses of the concluding claim, and in such modifications thereof as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which our invention relates.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view showing our improved garment hanger with a coat and trousers supported thereby; Fig. 2 is a view showing our improved garment hanger, this view being principally in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a view showing a section upon a plane indicated by the line 8-3, Fig. 2, and illustrating a portion of a pair of trousers sup-' ported by the garment hanger, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view upon a plane indicated by the line 44, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, our garment hanger comprises a rectangular frame having a horizontal bottom portion 5, parallel side portions 66 extending upward from the ends of the said horizontal bottom portion, and a top portion 7 connecting the upper ends of the side portions 6-6 and which top portion is provided with a hook 8 by which the garmenthangerwill be supported.
The frame above described is preferably formed from a single piece of wire bent to provide the various portions above referred to, although the frame may be made up of several parts.
Carried by the frame above referred to, and movable in a vertical direction relative thereto, is a clamping and garment supporting member made of a horizontal bottom portion 9, located adjacent to and extending parallel with the bottom portion 5, and two wing portions 101O located above the horizontal portion 9 and extending outwardly from each of the side portions 66, the outward ends of these wing portions being bent downward as shown in the drawing. The vertically movable clamping and garment supporting member is provided with means engaging the side portions 6-6, for guiding the same in its vertical movements, and is preferably constructed from wire bent into proper form, in which case the guiding means above referred to are preferably in the form of coils 11 formed of the wire of which said member is made and located between the ends of the horizontal portion 9 and the wing portions 10. Other forms of guiding means will, however, be provided in case the clamping and garment supporting member above referred to is not made of wire, it being merely necessary that the said member be guided in its vertical movements by the frame above referred to.
Such being the construction of our device, it will be obvious that upon lifting the clamping and garment supporting member into the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the horizontal portions 5 and 9 of the rectangular frame and of the said member will be separated, so that a portion of a pair of trousers may be inserted between said parts 5 and 9, after which the clamping member is permitted to descend and rest upon the trousers, as shown in Fig. 3. The coils 11 obviously guide the clamping member as it is lifted, as above explained. The coat being placed upon the garment hanger, the weight thereof, supported for the most part bv the wings 10, as will be understood from Fig.1, will act to force the clamping member downward and the horizontal portion 9 thereof into firm contact with the trousers, thereby securely holding them in place.
Having thus described our invention and explained the operation thereof, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A garment hanger of the character described, comprising a rigid frame provided with a rod or bar for the support of a garment thereon, said rigid frame being also provided with vertical sides; of a second rigid frame, provided with a clamping member, engaging with and movable upon the vertical sides of said first-mentioned frame and extending outwardly from said sides to support a garment thereon.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 25th 15 Signed at Sufl'ern, in the county of Rockland, and State of New York, this 29th day of May, 1911.
HARRY JONES. \Vitnesses F. A. CASEY, J. E. HARRINGTON.
