SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,729, dated September 12, 1893.
Application filed April 7, 1893. Serial No. 469,484. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK XV. KELLER, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in racks for holding lamp-chimneys and similar articles. p
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l shows in side elevation, my iinproved rack set up and in use with a number of lamp-chimneys mounted thereon. Fig. 2 shows an end view of the rack shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows a cross section of one of the rack bars, showing the pins for holding the chimneys. Fig. e shows a section through the frame bars. Fig. 5 shows a cross section of the frame bar in connection with a removable extension post for holding the frame bars extended. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of a folding extension post. Fig. 7 shows a modied form of construction in which a diiferent means for securing the frame bars extended, is employed.
Referring more particularly to the reference numerals marked on the drawings in a more specific description of the device, 1, 2 and 3 are the frame bars mounted loosely upon the hanger rods Li and 5, which are provided with hooks or eyes as 6 at their upper ends, by means of which the rack may be suspended in any desired place.
The upper sides of the frame bars are provided with inclined faces aand l), inclining outwardly from the vertical central line of the frame and secured in the frame bars and projecting at right angles to the inclined sides a and h are provided pegs or pins 7, 7, dsc., over which the chimneys are placed in position on the rack. The pins 7 may be of metal or any other desirable material.
The hanger rods a and 5 are provided with nuts or heads S on their lower ends which engage the lower frame bar and support all the frame bars.
For holding the several frame bars eX- tended, there is provided a series of posts as 9, 9, die., which are removably inserted in sockets l0, in the top of each of the bars (except the top one), and the post acts when in place, as a support to the next bar above it.
The device is useful for holding lamp-chimneys and similar articles, by suspending it in any convenient position, preferably where it can be readily reached by a person standing on the iioor, and the several chimneys orother articles, are placed over the pegs or pins, as shown; the base of the chimney resting squarely on the shoulder a or l) of the frame bar. When not in use, or for the purpose of shipment, the device can be closely packed or folded by removing the extension bars 9 and allowing the several bars to slip down the hanger rods until they rest one upon the other. The hanger rods are then bent over upon one another locking the bars together and making the device in convenient form for shipment or storage.
ln lieu of the removable extension post 9, l may provide extension post as A, which is hinged at 13 to one of the bars, and in eX- tended position is adapted to have its upper end received in a recess B provided in the adjacent upper bar. ln the use of this modiiication, there are no detachable pieces and the bars can be folded together, as before described, by slightly raising the upper bar to disengage the upper end of the post from the socket and then turning it down on top of the bar to which it is hinged at 13, where it will lie parallel with the body of the bar. When the several posts have been turned down in this manner, the several bars can be allowed to close together.
l also provide another modified form of construction, shown in Fig. 7, which consists in providing an extension bar as M, secured on the ends of the bars by means of screws as m. This bar M is preferably formed of sheet metal and is provided with brads as fr?, struck from the metal and adapted to engage the several frame bars. l also provide on the bar M pins or projections O, which may be utilized for holding chimneys or other articles, the same as the other pins of the device.
It is evident that other modications and changes than those herein described, may be inade without departing from the equivalents of my construction.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a Chimney rack, the combination of hanger rods, several frame bars vertically movable along the hanger rods, :removable extension posts interposed between the bars to hold them in extended position to form the rack, the several posts being secured in sockets in the upper face of the bars, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chimney rack, the combination of one or more hanger rods, two or more frame bars laterally movable on the hanger rods, pegs or pins secured inthe several frame bars and extending upwardly and outwardly from the general plane of the rack, folding extension posts hinged to the lower frame bar and adapted to engage in sockets in the underside of the adjacent upper frame bar in holding the traine extended, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK XV. KELLER.
