To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON G. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment-Securing Means, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to an adjustable attaching means whereby work holding attaclnnents may be attached to any of the several styles of engravers blocks, without having been especially made for that particular style of block, thus rendering said work holding clamps or attachments universal.
The jaws of engravers blocks are all formed with a plurality of holes in the upper surface of the jaw for the reception of the usual retaining clamps and pins for holding work, but it has been found that the several styles of blocks have these holes differently arranged, so that an attachment that depends for its securing means to the block upon pins or studs extending from its lower surface and engaging the holes in the jaws of the blocks, willbe found to only register with the holes in certain blocks and thus cannot be attached to all styles of blocks without being especially made therefor. To obviate this differently and make the attachments universal and adaptable to all styles of blocks, I have provided a novel .form of adjustable pin or stud that may have its position upon the plate changed within a sufficient scope to register with and be engaged by the holes in the jaws of any block.
The objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable means for securing work holding attachments upon engraver-s blocks having jaw-plates with a multiple of holes arranged in various ways.
Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as here shown, that Specification of Letters Patent.

I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1, is a partial elevational view of the head of an engravers block, embodying my device shown upon one jaw in section. Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view of a work holding attachment, showing the attaching studs in one position. Fig. 3, is a view of the same, showing the attaching studs in another position. Fig. 4, is a partial detail View of the work holding attachment, taken on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a detail edge view of the notched nut. Fig. 6, is a plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a detail edge view of the eccentric stud plate and stud. Fig. 8, is a bottom plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1, indicates the head of the block, which is provided with the usual sliding aws 2, each of which is shown pierced with a hole 3, of which there may be a series arranged in an order required in the different makes of blocks.
The work holding member 4, is formed with one or more studs 6, projecting from the lower surface thereof and adjustably arranged so that they can be set to engage and enter into any of the holes 3, within a limited scope. To accomplish this I have formed the work holding member 4, with the circular recess 7, in the lower surface thereof, and which recess communicates with the axial screw hole 8, within which is placed the retaining screw 9. Upon said retaining screw 9, and within the recess 7, is placed an eccentric studplate 10, which is provided with the orifice 11, placed to one side of the center thereof, and the stud 12, which is rigidly secured to said plate 10, and at right angles thereto. Vithin said recess 7 and upon said stud-plate 10, and retaining in frictional contact the studplate and the extension plate by the retaining screw 9, threaded therein is the nut 13, which is formed with the notch 14, to accommodate the stud 12. It will thus be readily seen that by loosening the screw 9, and thus releasing from frictional engagement the stud plate 10, the stud may be adjusted to any desired position within a scope equal to the radius from the center of the screw to the center of the stud-pin which has been formed to cover all diflerences in the position of the holes in the jaws of different blocks.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, in combination with work holding jaws formed with a recess in the lower surface thereof, a projecting stud, an eccentric plate secured to said stud and adapted to be rotated within said recess, a retaining-screw extending through said work holding means and projecting through the center of said recess, 15 and a nut formed with a notched edge to engage said stud and adapted to be screwthreaded upon said retaining screw for the purpose of holding said stud-plate and stud within said recess in a normally rigid manner.
