COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed July 27, 1914. Serial No. 853,417.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTI HAMALAINEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludlow, in the county of Windsor, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination tools.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a combination tool which can be readily adjusted for use as a square of the ordinary type, a bevel square, a level or a straight edge.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the improved tool with the arms partially collapsed; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the arms adjusted to permit the use of the tool as a square, one of the side plates being removed; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with the arms adjusted to use the tool as a straight edge; Fig. 4, a perspective view of one end of the tool disclosing the spirit level; Fig. 5, a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6, a perspective view of the inner end of one of the pivoted arms.
Referring to the drawings the improved tool is shown as comprising a body portion A which includes side plates 10 and 11 secured together in spaced relation by means of bolts 12, the spacing of the plates being partly accomplished by interposed bars 14 and 15. The bars 14 and 15 are pivoted adj acent opposite ends upon certain of the bolts 12 and are provided adjacent their other opposite ends with elongated slots 12 through which said bolts pass. By this construction it will be obvious that when the central portions of said bars are forced inwardly opposite ends thereof will be moved outwardly. The bars 14 and 15 are recessed centrally as at "16 on their inner sides and seated in these recesses are the terminals of a bow spring 17, said spring hearing at its center against a block 18 carried by one of the bolts 12. The tension of the spring 17 serves to constantly force opposite ends of the bars 14 and 15 inwardly.
Pivotally mounted on certain of the bolts 12 between the plates 10 and 11 at each end of the latter are arms 19 the inner ends of which are rounded as at 20 and provided respectively with notches 21.
Mounted on opposite ends of the bars 14 and 15 are studs 23 adapted to interchangeably engage in the notches 21 of respective arms 19. By pressing centrally on the'bars 14 and 15 the studs 23 can be disengaged from the notches 21 to permit adjustment of the arms 19 and when such adjustment is had the spring 17 will force the studs into engagement with the coiiperating notches and lock the arms 19 in such adjusted position. It will be noted that the arms 19 are capable of adjustment with respect to the body A so as to render the device serviceable as a trisquare, bevel square or straight edge.
Mounted in the plate 10 are suitable spirit levels 25 and 26 arranged at right angles to each other for use respectively under different conditions as will be obvious.
What is claimed is A tool of the class described comprising a body consisting of spaced side plates, longitudinal bars interposed between the side plates, bolts engaged through the side plates and bars inwardly of the ends of said bars whereby inward movement of the central portions of'said bars will produce outward movement of their ends, arms pivoted between the plates at each end of the latter, said arms having notches formed in their inner ends, and studs on opposite ends of said bars engageable in the notches of respective arms to hold the latter in different adjusted relation to the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
