Abstract

The battery charger connected to the battery drives a pulsed charging current through the battery cells with a current supply part ('on' time) and a non-current supply part ('off time). The method involves adjustment for a max. charging voltage for the battery and during the subsequent pulse sequence the total pulse length is unaltered with the current fed during the 'on' time exceed an average current calculated for the battery. During the 'off' time for each pulse, two separate voltage measurements are carried out, of which the first corresponds to the battery voltage without influence from the effective direct resistance (Rh), whilst the second corresponds to the battery voltage with regard to the effective delayed resistance (Rp). Starting from the received measurement values, the pulse on-time/off-time is determined so that the charging voltage with high precision is continuously controlled as close to the permitted max. charging voltage as possible.
