Abstract

A read/write storage system for reading/writing data to and from a flexible optical or magneto-optical media (disc or tape eg helically scanned by rotating drum) includes an optical read/write head and a fine movement stabilizer 64 positioned proximate the flexible media for stabilizing the flexible media in a desired position so that the optical head providing focussed light need not be moved substantially toward or away from the media in order to maintain the light focussed on the media. A record disc may be additionally stabilised by Bernouilli plate 66 as part of cartridge (12) (eg Fig 1) or attached to drive 10. Magnetic head (170) below the media and plate (166) may provide stabilisation (Fig 11); coupler (164) surrounding lens (156) may also be shaped for stabilisation. Geometrics of stabilizer (64) and magnetic head (170) are detailed W.r.t. (Figs 5 and 12). The magneto-optical assembly of (Fig 13) includes U-shaped magnetic element (180) and the optical head on the same side of the disc. Alternative head assemblies are detailed (Figs 7, 8, 9). Optical information storage systems are disclosed (eg. Fig 1) including spicule member (28) guiding cartridge (12) and motor (34) for moving arm (30) (with the head assembly). <IMAGE>
