Abstract
A labyrinth seal is placed between a shaft or axle (10) and a stator (13). The seal comprises an alternating sequence of two rings (2,4) with radial clearance therebetween and rings (3) having radial clearance with respect to the stator bore (15). Of the two rings with radial clearance therebetween, the outer ring (4) is located with a press fit in the bore (15) and the inner ring (2) with a press fit on the shaft (10). Each ring (3) located between two rings (2,4) is located with a press fit on the shaft (10). The rings (3) may have concentric annular grooves in their flanks (Fig. 4). The inner part of the labyrinth seal may be formed by a bush formed with annular grooves and press fitted onto the shaft (Figs. 5, 6). The rings (4) may be of an elastic material and be held against the bore of the stator by spring rings co-operating with the inner periphery thereof (Fig. 6). A cover (12) sealingly co-operating with the stator 13 is provided on the shaft. Pressurised fluid may be communicated to the closed chamber 14 formed by the cover and stator to aid the labyrinth seal. <IMAGE>
