693,349. Stuffing-box substitutes. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN. Feb. 27, 1952, No. 5178/52. Class 122(v) In a grease lubricated bearing unit comprising a housing 4 accommodating a roller bearing 5 and a sealing device at each side of the bearing, to ensure that when the unit is charged with grease under pressure excess grease escapes from one side only of the bearing, one of the sealing devices 15 has a small running clearance 17 with the bearing shaft 2 and is provided with an annular flexible lip 16 that is pressed into contact with the shafts by the grease pressure to prevent escape of grease past that device whilst the other sealing device has a small running clearance that permits escape of excess grease. When charging ceases and the grease pressure is relieved the flexible lip 16 returns to its original position clear of the shaft 2. The sealing device 15 is a U shaped ring axially spaced from the bearing 5 to provide an annular space in the housing 4 to which pressure grease is supplied when charging through passages 19, 20 in the shaft 2; the other sealing device is a labyrinth formed by intermeshing discs 10, 11. The sealing ring 15 as a whole, or only the flexible lip 16, may be made of flexible material.
