Abstract
762,958. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Sept. 23, 1954 [Sept. 25, 1953], No. 26500/53. Class 122 (5). In sealing means for preventing leakage of liquid through the gap between two relatively rotating elements and comprising a circular cross-section flexible sealing ring carried in a groove in one of the elements and dimensioned so that it is compressed into sealing contact with the other element, the groove in the case of a journal bearing type seal is inclined to the axis of relative rotation (Fig. 1) and in the case of a radial face seal is made eccentric to the axis of relative rotation (Fig. 2) so that during relative rotation of the elements transverse movement occurs between the ring and the other element and ensures lubrication of the ring by the sealed liquid. The sealing ring is preferably made of rubber. In Fig. 1 the sealing ring 3 is housed in a groove 4 formed in the casing 2 and inclined to the axis of relative rotation 6 such that on its major axis the ring contacts the shaft 1 at points axially separated by a distance B substantially equal to half the thickness of the ring. In Fig. 2 the sealing ring 15 is housed in a circular groove 16 formed in the shaft 13 and eccentric with the axis of relative rotation 17 by an amount substantially equal to a quarter of the thickness of the ring.
