Abstract

An optical fibre (14) is coupled to a light-emitting device, e.g. another optical fibre (13), via a light-transmitting element (17). In order to accommodate the end of the optical fibre (14), the light-transmitting element (17) has a cavity (38) bounded by a surface of revolution (40). Arranged between the surface of revolution (40) and a plane end face (50), perpendicular to the axis, of the optical fibre (14) is a liquid optical material (51) whose refractive index differs from that of the light-transmitting element (17) with the result that the optical material (51) acts as a lens. The device is simple and inexpensive to produce and permits a substantially better coupling efficiency than known devices, in which, for example, two optical fibres are simply held end to end. <IMAGE>
