Abstract

The ink ribbon (2) from a continuous ribbon cartridge of a printing mechanism is transported by means of transport rollers (4). A slotted disc (16, 17) is driven directly by the ink ribbon as a reporting device for the ink ribbon. The rotary movement of the slotted disc (16, 17) is monitored by means of a light-emitting diode (19) and a phototransistor (20). The pulses of the phototransistor (20) are compared with a given value. If the pulse sequence drops below the given value, the printer is automatically switched off. If, consequently, there is no transporting of the ink ribbon as a result of an interference (tearing of the ink ribbon, interruption in the drive system), the printer ceases to print. The printing mechanism can thus operate without observation, for example at night. <IMAGE>
