Abstract

1,094,694. Electric incandescent lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 13, 1965 [July 16, 1964], No. 29658/65. Heading H1F. An incandescent lamp contains a tungsten filament, an inert gas and a gas providing a mixture of hydrogen, bromine and hydrogen bromide during operation, the ratio in gm. atoms of bromine to hydrogen being between 1 : 1 and 1 : 7, the lamp being constructed so that a variation in the ratio due to loss of hydrogen is prevented and the bulb wall assumes a temperature of at least 300‹ C. The bulb may also contain substances which release hydrogen or combine with excess of bromine. The initial filling may contain a mixture of hydrogen and bromine or hydrogen bromide, bromoform, methylene bromide, methyl bromide, ethylene dibromide, mixtures of these, or of methane or other hydrocarbons with carbon tetrabromide or brominated hydrocarbons. A hydrogen permeable bulb may be enclosed within an outer bulb not pervious to hydrogen, the intervening space being filled with hydrogen. When using tubular lamps with an axial filament, coiled tungsten supports for the filament may be provided.
