Abstract

1,064,532. Electric incandescent lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 28, 1965 [July 1, 1964], No. 27264/65. Heading H1F. An electric lamp comprises a light-pervious bulb containing a tungsten filament and a filling gas consisting of an inert gas and a transport gas which provides a mixture of hydrogen chloride, chlorine and hydrogen during the burning of the lamp, the lamp being so designed that loss of hydrogen is substantially prevented during the lifetime of the lamp, that the temperature of the bulb wall is at least 360‹ C. during burning and that the ratio of hydrogen to chlorine in the transport gas lies between 4: 5 and 5: 4. The transport gas may be formed by including hydrochloric acid or chlorinated hydrocarbons such as chloroform, methylene chloride or dichloride, ethylene dichloride, mixtures of these or a mixture of methane with carbon tetrachloride. The lamp envelope may be of quartz or glass impervious to hydrogen or a hydrogen-pervious envelope may be enclosed in an outer envelope impervious to hydrogen and filled with hydrogen with or without an inert gas. In one example a coiled tungsten filament is connected between molybdenum plates enclosed in a cylindrical tube containing inert gas and hydrogen chloride, the filament being spaced from the tube walls by tungsten spirals. The tube is enclosed in an outer tube containing argon and hydrogen, the leading-in wires to the molybdenum plates serving to support the inner tube.
