Abstract

[Also in Division F1] Apparatus for converting nuclear energy into mechanical energy comprises a reactor through channels in which steam or gas is caused to flow, at least a part of which channels is rotatably arranged, and a number of these rotatably arranged channels or parts of channels are made totally or partly of nuclear fuel. The stationary parts of the channels may also be made totally or partly of nuclear fuel. Such a reactor is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises a radial flow turbine of double-rotation type, the rotor 19 and the stator 20 both being rotatable and being supported respectively by shafts 21, 22 passing through the reactor housing 23. Both the rotor 19 and the stator 20 are provided with a number of vanes 28, 29 which mesh together in such a way that each constitutes guide vanes for the other. The vanes and possibly also other parts of the rotor and stator and of the housing 23 are made to a greater or smaller extent of nuclear fuel which may be provided with a shell of a material, e.g. titanium or beryllium. The steam or gas, e.g. D 2 O steam, is supplied through feed-channels in the shafts 21, 22, flows radially outwards through the channels formed by the vanes 28, 29 and is discharged through an outlet 30 in the housing 23. The rotor 19 on the shaft 21 is axially displaceable by means of a motor 31 and motion transmitting means 32 in such a way that the vanes 28, 29 can be brought, either totally or partially, out of mesh with each other to provide reactor control. The stator 20 may be axially displaceable in a similar manner. Besides the fuel contained in the turbine, the reactor may also include fuel elements arranged in the usual manner. The shafts 21, 22 are each mechanically coupled with a compressor and an electric generator. Fluid from the outlet 30 is fed via a heat exchanger to the two compressors before being returned to the feed-channels in the shafts 21, 22.
