Abstract

593011 Disclosed is a cathode for use in an electrolytic/reduction cell providing increased electrical conductivity and mechanical joint strength between a cathode and electrical contact. The cathode comprises an aluminium head configured for connection to a plurality of aluminium flexible sheets at a first square-end slot connection portion, the aluminium head also comprising a second square-end slot connection portion. A copper electrical contact is configured for connection to the second connection portion. The plurality of aluminium flexible sheets and the first connection portion are electromechanically connected and combined by friction stir welding and the copper electrical contact and the second connection portion are electromechanically connected and combined by friction stir welding. The copper electrical contact comprises a tapered projection configured to be received in the second connection portion.
