Abstract
Aluminum smelter comprising: (i) a series of electrolytic cells (2), comprising an anode(9), a cathode and a pot shell equipped with a side wall (7a) and a bottom, each cathode including at least one cathode output (12), (ii) a main electric circuit through which an electrolysis current passes, including an electrical conductor (14) connected to each cathode output (12) of a cell N, and to the anode (9) of a cell N+1, (iii) a means to stabilize the electrolytic cells (2) among a secondary electric circuit (5, 6) or the use of a cathode having a grooved surface. One of the cathode outputs (12) of the cell N passes through the bottom of the pot shell; each electric conductor (14) extends from each cathode output (12) of the cell N in the direction of cell N+1 and is passed through by the electrolysis current, in an upstream-downstream direction only, when the electrolytic cells N, N+1 (2) are in operation.
