Abstract
A method for detecting a compound that mimics, potentiates or inhibits the physiological effect of the fat protein, the method comprising: (a) for a compound that mimics the physiological effect of the fat protein, assessing the effect of the compound on a fat protein-activated signal transducer and activator of transcription ( STAT) DNA response element coupled to a reporter gene; or (b) for a compound that potentiates or inhibits the physiological effect of the fat protein, consider the effect of the compound after the response produced by the fat protein on a fat protein-activated STAT DNA response element coupled to a reporter gene; the response element and reporter are expressed in a fat protein responsive cell line; a "kit" of parts adapted for use in such a method and a compound identified by such a method.
