Abstract

The filter mouthpiece for a filter-tip cigarette has a passage through the filter in the axial direction with an air resistance much less than that of the rest of the filter. A device causes this passage to operate as a bypass for the filter whenever the smaker sucks with more than a predetermined force, so that with a samll amount of suction the passage is kept shut. When the passage is opened by excessive suction it offers virtually no throttling effect. The passage is closed by a small spring-loaded ball valve, with the ball (10) on the mouthpiece side.
